Overview
Potter
Kyan took an interest in pottery at a young age. They love to work with their hands and create, and don’t mind getting dirty, but they’re not great with machinery. As they got older they began to sculpt as well, making little figurines and toys amongst other projects. They’re a hard worker and tends to hyper focus, losing hours to their work if they’re not careful, sometimes even forgetting to eat. They leave their window unlocked for their friends to yell at them to take breaks.
Dancer
Kyan loves music. However, they were never musically-talented and never got the hang of actually playing an instrument, so they took up dancing instead. After they lost their ear their ability to make music got even worse, but their love of song grew - so they ramped up their dance game and became a highly skilled performer. They love to dance any style to any song, but like fast-paced tempos the most. They’re quite fond of dancing with fire, specifically.
Stargazer
Always the dreamer and never the thrill seeker, Kyan never had any interest in space travel. While they love space and the stars, they prefer to watch from the safety of Timber Hearth. They’re a big supporter of Outer Wilds Ventures, always cheering them on, and loves when other Hearthians perform dangerous stunts or experiments - as long as they’re not the subject. They took an interest in Slate’s engineering at a young age because of the way they made things go boom, but grew to genuinely appreciate and respect their talent for creating machines and adapting old alien tech.
Upbeat
Kyan is - for the most part - optimistic and energetic. They’re sociable, laugh easily and often, kind to the hatchlings, and get along with just about everyone. They loathe being alone when they’re not busy working. They can feel overwhelmed or anxious sometimes, and mitigate this by meditating - a skill taught to them by Gabbro. They show affection freely and like to hug. While they’re not lazy at all, they do understand the value of relaxation and like to nap in the sun.
Their main source of anxiety comes from the space program. Kyan is always worried that their friends won't come back someday, and they can't bear the thought of losing them. Expressing these concerns to Gabbro is what prompted the traveler to teach the potter how to meditate and calm their nerves.
Gossip
Kyan’s best friends are Dreika, Lazuli, Slate, and Gabbro, and they also spend a lot of time talking to Porphy. Living nearby the winemaker, they’re privy to a lot of gossip and are guilty of eavesdropping. Most of their info gets shared with Slate over dinner at the launch tower. Being friends with Slate, they’re well-versed in sarcasm and sass, and can bite back easily. The two of them banter relentlessly, and enjoy it.
Ghost Matter
The one truly traumatic event for Kyan. As a teenager, they wanted to feel useful constantly, and paired with their interest in Slate’s work that meant they often wanted to help them. On one such occasion it all went sideways - figuratively and literally - and an accident sent Kyan into a patch of ghost matter previously undiscovered. Though Slate pulled them out quickly, even a few seconds caused them to sustain serious damage. Their ear almost completely burned away and the remaining bit is numb, and their eyes have discolored where a ghostly green crept in. As a result they have lost their hearing in their right ear and peripheral vision in their right eyes.
The resulting disfigurement and scars were initially a source of distress for Kyan, as they suffered from nightmares and physical discomfort for a while after the accident. Seeing their scars reminded them of the pain, of scaring the hell out of Slate, and of ruining the entire experiment with their clumsiness. Over time, however, they move past all of that and learn to bear their injuries with dignity.
They don't blame Slate for any of it, and Slate doesn't blame them either. In fact, they needle one another about the incident regularly.
Humming
Kyan has a smooth, rich, melodic voice. They could probably sing if they wanted to. However, they opt to hum instead.
They hum along to music, as well as while they work. The vibration in their ears that humming provides feels good in their bad ear, which otherwise tends to suffer from incessant ringing.
Physical
Slightly taller than average. Strong legs, lean arms, flat stomach, narrow shoulders. Their hands are often stained with clay and there’s usually some dirt under their nails. Their spots are concentrated on their right side with a trademark spot over their nose. Their eyes are a yellow-orange except where ghost matter discolored them, and they’re missing most of their right ear.
Kyan always wears a bandanna, and owns a variety of colors. Their favorite is purple, but they like their orange one a lot too.
