Lex huddles down in his hoodie as the jocks pass by, laughing and jostling each other. Don’t notice me, he thinks, jaw aching from being clenched so long. He can feel his heart thudding in an effort not to run — if he did they’d catch him instantly. He’d taken the long route to school on purpose today, he’s been trying so hard just to be left alone.

No such luck. One of the larger boys breaks off from the pack, making a beeline towards him. Before Lex can open his mouth, he clamps a thick hand around his forearm, lowering his head and hissing ”We’re having a talk." as he steers him by the shoulder around the corner.

“I don’t want to talk to you.“ Lex says sharply, but Keith ignores him, closing him in with one hand against the wall and the other a vice grip around his arm. If he notices that Lex's breathing hitches for an instant when his hands get too close to his face, there's no sign.

"I just don't get why you’re ignoring me now.” he says, voice rising in unhappiness (he’s too loud does he want the entire neighborhood to hear) "I really fuckin' don't! Turn your back on me all you want, your problems aren't just gonna go away 'cause you're ignoring them - hey, Lex, wait-"

He grabs Lex when he tries to elbow free. “Don’t you get it?” Keith whispers. He leans down, and his eyes are huge and dark and desperate in the gloom. Lex had loved them, once, and the thought only makes him ill now. “You need me.”

He’s too close. Lex grits his teeth and stomps down hard on Keith’s toes, and when the other boy howls he knocks him down to the ground with his desperation to flee as he sprints into a alleyway. He slows when he can't hear Keith following him anymore - Lex knows this ghost town better than anyone else, and Keith knows he couldn't catch him here.

But he’ll have to go home eventually, and they both know it. Lex drops to his knees and presses his hands against his eyelids. His contacts ache. He doesn’t want to be laughed at when he goes to school, or have Keith inevitably trap him again on the way back. He doesn’t want to go home to another broken window for the third time this month.

Keith is really going to kill him, one day. Him or one of his lackies who think it’s fun to mess with some latchkey kid whose mom ran off with a golf club manager —

Well. Lex opens his eyes, looks at his hands as though they’re new. He takes a deep breath and smiles as widely as he can, feels it set broad and wooden in his mouth.

Keith can’t get him if he’s dead.

FLOWER POWER

Bluebell - constancy, sorrowful regret, kindness

Lex can erase (not heal, an important distinction) the memories that hurt people. He can't see the contents of the memories before he removes them, and is therefore unable to discriminate between different types of pain. As a result, his attempts at memory removal often results in large swaths of memories being wiped from the psyche.

Foxglove - a wish, stateliness; “I am not ambitious for myself, but for you.”, occupation, insincerity

Lex is naturally drawn to people who feel intense longing (of any kind, not necessarily romantic feelings) and can foresee the "best" result of the desire via physical contact, though not how to reach it.

Buttercup - wealthiness, ingratitude, “I wish I was rich.”, cheerfulness

Even Lex isn't sure what this power is, except that actively using it causes him intense pain. Feelings of entitlement tend to automatically trigger this ability, resulting in side effects such as unpredictable mood swings in public areas (worst in restaurants), out-of-the-blue remarks directed towards otherwise unremarkable strangers, and being a dick to rich people, amongst other things.
