Aberrations

A class of entities featured in the webcomic Synodic Link.

Aberrations are a mysterious type of being that originate from beyond this plane of existence. They find themselves appearing in the world when physical dimensions passively "sweep" over them; individual aberrations typically only remain for extend periods of time if they lack the knowledge or willpower to leave on their own.

When "defeated" in battle, aberrations are not destroyed or killed, but instead the physical shock causes them to eject themselves back into The Inbetween from where they originate. They can also be banished in a variety of other specific methods. The process of causing an aberration to leave a dimension is known as "ejecting."

Aberrations are typically ambiently hostile to life native to the dimensions they find themselves in, and do not come in one specific "species," but instead vary greatly in appearance and abilities. Each aberration has both an Attribute and a Form, the Form being its physical "species" and the Attribute being a type of modifier, in a sense.

Currently Known Attributes

  • Neutral: Can be thought of as a "base form," only possessing the traits inherent to the specific Form without notable modifiers.
  • Shattered: Very fragile and easy to eject, but extremely sharp and capable of higher damage.
  • Ethereal: Unable to be damaged with typical physical objects, and instead must be defeated with energy or anomalous items.
  • Metallic: Made of or coated in strong metal, making them very resistant to both physical and energy-based attacks while not sacrificing much mobility.
  • Clockwork: Made up of various machine-like parts; tends to make the aberration slower but heavier, stronger, and more resilient.
  • Cosmic: Able to ignite themselves on fire and quickly accelerate to very high speeds, making them dangerously quick. That said, they tend to have a bit of difficulty controlling their trajectory, and redirecting themselves after the acceleration is nearly impossible.
  • Electrified: Able to harness and manifest electricity, making this attribute very dangerous.
  • Aerodynamic: Gains the ability to fly, or increased air control if the base Form already has flight.
  • Gun: Morphed into a shape where it takes on the appearance of a gun, able to fire bullets from its body.

Drifter

Pictured: A Neutral Drifter

Drifters are vaguely anthropomorphic aberrations made up of flat diamond shapes. A common "fodder" aberration, but they can still be tricky to take out if not hit on their small weakpoint, the gemstone-like shape in the "neck" area; destroying this will instantly eject a Drifter.

As the name suggests, Drifters are somewhat lazy in nature, but don't underestimate them; they will still attack if you get their attention, and the bizarre flat shapes and surprising resilience of their bodies make them very capable of harm.

Wyvern

Pictured: An Ethereal Wyvern

Wyverns are more aggressive and agile airborn aberrations, possessing four wings, a wispy tail, and a pair of floating, pointy hands. They are able to freely move around in the air and will swoop in and charge opponents. As terrifying as it is to be in their line of attack, it does give you an opportunity to land a hit without them dodging, if you can pull it off.

Slither

Pictured: A Clockwork Slither

Slithers are large, heavy snakelike aberrations that travel along the ground and try coiling around or slamming down onto opponents. They tend to be more resilient than most forms, but are also much slower as a result of their weight.

Recursicannon

Pictured: A Cosmic Recursicannon

Recursicannons are small aberrations resembling small cannons with feet, capable of walking around and of launching copies of themselves that promptly magnetize the "original" form back into them, as a method of simultaneous attack and movement.

The speed of this ability paired with their size makes Recursicannons tricky to land hits on, and if you eject one after it fires a copy of itself before it's pulled into it, the copy will remain and be capable of creating another nested instance of itself. Not the strongest form of aberration, but certainly troublesome to deal with.

Architect

Pictured: A Shattered Architect

A large and terrifying form of aberration, Architects are towering abstract figures made up of long pieces with a multitude of limbs along their bodies and seemingly lacking a lower half, their "heads" comprised of some sort of prism-like objects. Architects have the ability to alter the terrain around them and build onto it in abstract shapes, which also often take on their own Attributes; a Shattered Architect, for instance, often makes jagged and sharp structures and as such is quite dangerous.
