briar was born to her mortal mother, Selene, and her lesser deity father, Carnallus. She was raised under her mother's familial deity, Sattise, with the promise of her mother being allowed into her father's domain upon Briar's coming of age after her marital union.

Nearly a year before her coming of age and marriage arranged by her grandmother, Briar met a young man who called himself Varien. The two quickly became acquainted, and much to the family's dismay, Varien's presence eventually ruined the second part of Sattise's agreement with the family.

Varien, in addition to revealing no intent to stay with Briar, also revealed his status as a lower deity of mischief and trickery. But such trickery prompted Sattise's presence, the goddess binding the two together as Varien's punishment and aid to Briar's family. Now, the two are forced together until Briar's mother passes.
