Personality

By nature Erios is cheerful, energetic, and outgoing, but the horrors he and his people have suffered and the effects of the resulting trauma have worn most of his good nature away. His impulsiveness and stubbornness remain, but are accompanied now by a burning anger and strong paranoia. He frequently reacts before he thinks, often to the detriment and even harm of himself and others.

He is very slow to trust and tends to react suddenly and violently to any perceived threat, but he remains exceptionally loyal to those he has come to trust. He will go to great and sometimes self-destructive lengths for these people, and will do the same to achieve his perceived goals. Despite this he tends to see most of his relationships these days as business-oriented, rather than friendly, and does not perceive most of his compatriots as friends in the traditional sense.

His traumas and his resulting attitude have also somewhat compromised his morals. He has done any number of terrible and unforgivable things to people in order to achieve his goals, and while he believes it will be worth it in the end his actions do sometimes haunt him. He doesn't have a great deal of hope that he and the rebellion will truly succeed in their goals, and he's certain there's no real place for him in the world if they do. He both anticipates and fears they day they do manage to overthrow the monarchy, and does his best not to think about what he'll do with himself if they do succeed. He's terrified of what his loved ones would think of the things he's experienced and done if they were ever to find out, and he has trouble reconciling that with the fact that he truly does believe the ends in this case justify the means.

Trivia
  • Despite his noble upbringing, he has adapted very well to living primarily on the streets and acting from the shadows. Has taken to thievery to survive like a fish to water
  • While he believes his current goals both justified and necessary, he often regrets cutting ties to his home and family, and misses them greatly
  • Doesn't sleep much, and sometimes suffers from terrible nightmares
  • Loves to dance, but doesn't do it much these days
Abilities
  • Extremely quick and agile, skilled at stealth and breaking & entering. Not slowed terribly by the loss of his hand
  • Has extensive combat training, primarily with swords and knives, though he's no slouch with a crossbow
  • Actually does possess some leadership skills, even if he doesn't use them much
  • Skilled horseback rider
History

Erios is the eldest child of one of the highest noble families of the elven kingdom of Orvinir. He was never exactly a model heir, but accepted his role as one, though he was determined to do the job his own way. This led to some conflict with his parents, who both despaired of his hot-headed nature, and his much more serious younger brother once the latter was old enough to understand the situation. Still, the family was happy enough, and Orvinir was a good place to grow up.

Even at a relatively young age Erios had his own gang of friends so to speak, children of other nobles, as well as those of the guards or servants, including the heir to the throne. The two of them were betrothed for a political marriage from a fairly early age, and while they were extremely close friends they generally saw each other as more akin to siblings than lovers, and the idea generally made the both of them somewhat uncomfortable. Even so, both were also accepting of their roles in their society, and were resigned to the political marriage.

In the mean time, as he got older Erios spent most of his time among the guards, soldiers, and warriors of the kingdom. Though both his parents and his brother had a good deal of skill with magic, Erios himself had no particular talent in that area and favored physical practices instead, taking up more and more combat training, as well as a number of other more active enterprises. He explored a number of different combat styles, riding, dance, running and climbing, and so on, establishing a good relationship in this way with a fair number of people around the kingdom, particularly the fighting forces. Despite their general differences, his parents couldn't really disapprove of the relationships he was establishing, even if they remained not entirely certain what to make of his behavior compared to what they would have expected.

In his young adulthood his father was killed in a magical accident, along with a couple of other kingdom mages. Though his mother took up most of the responsibilities of his house and family, he and his brother also began to take on more and more of those, becoming a bigger part of elven noble society at that time. It was a difficult time, but after a while things did settle into a sort of pattern, and if they didn't go back to what he thought of as normal, he and the family learned to adapt.

Not more than a few years after this time, though, attacks began occurring at the borders of the kingdom, pushes into their territory from the adjacent largely human-inhabited lands. The attacks at first resulted mostly in small skirmishes, fairly easily repelled, but they continued happening and over time began to grow worse and more persistent, bringing the vanguard of actual armies to bear against the elven borders, and the elves were unable to hold out against these more powerful pushes. They lost ground quickly after that, until the invaders were on the borders of the city itself. Erios and the rest of his family did what they could do contribute to resisting the invasion, Erios with their own fighting force and the rest of his family with the battle mages and other casters, but it quickly became clear that they wouldn't be able to keep the invaders out for long. They began to lose large portions of their own army, as well as the civilian populace that couldn't flee in time, and many of the mages and nobles turned their attentions instead to attempting to evacuate as many people as the could, largely using magical teleportation to get their people beyond the reach of the invaders.

Erios stayed with the army as they held back the invaders for as long as they could, but finally they too were forced to retreat and join the exodus from the city. They'd already lost a great deal of their fighting force, and more died in their attempt to escape, but some at least did manage to join the other refugees. His mother and some of the other mages remained to protect the teleportation circles they'd been using, and while they succeeded in doing so until the last refugees were across, those mages were killed by the invaders, depriving the elves of a number of their powerful casters and noble heads of house. Their king was also among the lingering mages, elevating Erios' friend the heir to queen.

Simply keeping the refugees together and safe after that point proved difficult for those remaining, and Erios felt as if he had little to contribute. He was a fighter, and despite his preparations to take over as head of his house, he discovered himself sorely lacking in that area in light of everything that had happened, and he had a very difficult time trying to focus on the safety of the people through the rage he felt over the invasion and destruction of their home. His brother took on more and more of that responsibility as he found himself incapable, and he withdrew more and more from his responsibilities, dwelling almost constantly on the invasion and those responsible. He reached a point were he couldn't focus on anything to do with the refugees and the protection of his people, and felt as if he and his anger had no place among them. He felt he would be better served seeking out those responsible for their destruction, and to put and end to that horror at its source.

He discussed it only briefly with his brother and their new queen, both of whom tried strenuously to convince him to stay. He left against their wishes, making the trip into the human kingdom that had invades his own, and to the capital city. He had some difficulty there at first, finding himself in a couple of violent encounters with local soldiers before he realized he needed to move with more stealth. He spent some months learning what he could about the society, the nobility, and the king, and more time after that working out the king's habits and schedule as much as possible, formulating a plan to assassinate him at the first opportunity. He didn't think much beyond that, his desire for vengeance at this point overwhelming any consideration he might have for what might happen if he succeeded.

He did not spend as much time planning as he should have, in the end, and his attempt to assassinate the king was unsuccessful. He was injured and captured, and the king had his right hand cut off as a message before having him imprisoned, mistakenly believing him to be working with a known local resistance force, with whom he'd actually had no contact at all. His presence in the castle dungeons became known to this resistance force, however, and after several days of torture and interrogation one of their members, posing as a castle guard, was able to rescue him and get him out of the city. His recovery was long and difficult, but during his time among them he gained a certain respect for the resistance and what they were doing, and came to view working with them as his best chance to successfully assassinate the king and his ilk in the future. He now works closely with them, using his expertise largely as they direct.
