Plum, (age unknown), is an eccentric court jester at first glance, and more than happy to simply play that card to most he meets. In truth, he's much more than that, and plays to an agenda only he knows the answer of. With his true nature being that of a Wish Dragon, he's forced to serve whoever holds his lamp as Master, and he takes great joy in making sure their wishes go as horribly wrong as possible. Over the years, he's become quite adept at hiding his lamp from mortals, increasing the length of time between Masters and achieving the closest thing to "freedom" he'll likely ever get.

Early Life

Spoiler warning: This section contains information about Plum's past he himself does not know.

Born a human to a poor farmer couple in the late 1300s, Plum was known as Ha-Neul. He had a happy—if hard—childhood and was very loved by his parents, who gave him and his siblings everything they could. When he was thirteen, he and another village boy were caught kissing and caused a scandal that their village never forgave them for. Ha-Neul's parents feared for his safety and their family's reputation, and though they wished for him to be happy they cautioned him against stirring up trouble, for their sake and his own. Ha-Neul cared deeply for his parents and didn't want to cause them further hardship, so he did his best to fit into the life the village expected of him. When he turned eighteen he began to court one of the village girls, but couldn't find any true attraction to her. Instead of allowing himself to lead a false life, he called off the courtship, told his family goodbye, and left to travel the world.

With only the clothes on his back, Ha-Neul travelled by foot or begged rides from passing farmer's carts. He often traded his labor for bits of food and a dry place to sleep, learning many skills and trades this way as well as meeting many interesting people. His most notable jobs included tending a temple, serving as a nobleman's footbearer, dyeing clothing, learning to read and transcribing holy books, and serving in the army for a country that wasn't his own (which he quickly fled when that fact was discovered.) For nearly twenty years he travelled, visiting many faraway places and learning multiple languages and cultures. He learned from monks, entertained kings, slept alongside concubines, sailed the seas with spice traders, and practiced forbidden arts in dark, forgotten caves. It was somewhere in these travels that he met Yenin.

Freed from his childhood village's watchful gaze and expectations, Ha-Neul had taken many lovers over the years and experimented with plenty of men. Many of them he thought fondly of, but none more so than Yenin. When Ha-Neul finally began to tire of his endless travels and yearned for a place to call home, he returned to Yenin's small woodland farm in southern Russia. Yenin welcomed him back with open arms, and the two settled down to become their own family. Though many others preferred to leave Yenin alone for fear of his size, strength, and temperment, Ha-Neul was sweet to him, and Yenin fiercely protective and loving in return. Yenin was a burly, gruff man Ha-Neul often fondly referred to as 'his bear.' In return, Ha-Neul was his Plum for the smaller's love of the plum trees in their orchard, where Yenin would often find him snacking (once to the point where he was even sick).

For nearly a decade, Ha-Neul and Yenin lived together happily on their farm they had named The Orchard. Yenin had no biological family left and Ha-Neul would tell him stories of his large family and happy childhood on cold winter evenings. They had begun to talk of adopting some children together when Yenin fell gravely ill. No medicine or healer they could find was able to help. Hearthbroken and desperate in what were very likely his partner's final days, Ha-Neul used his knowledge from his time spent practicing forbidden arts to plead to any gods or higher beings out there who would listen to help Yenin. One came to him and made a deal—Yenin's health for Ha-Neul's memories and servitude. With no other options, Ha-Neul kissed his unconscious partner goodbye and accepted the deal. Yenin woke up healthy and alone, and never saw Ha-Neul again.

Biography

Servitude

Waking alone and cold in a dark cave, the only things he could recall was a warm, husky laugh and a voice whispering, "My Plum." He knew he was a wish dragon, bound to serve masters and grant their heart's desires, but that was all he knew. Latching onto the one thing that made his chest warm, he decided his name must be Plum. Picking up his lamp and walking out of the cave, he set off to a destination even he wasn't sure of.

Plum's first masters all blurred together in quick, easy wishes and equally quick, easy dismissals. Despite his eagerness to serve, to be friendly, to find a connection, his masters saw him as nothing but a tool to use and dispose of. Master after master passed by, smearing together in a haze and leaving Plum alone and cold. He slowly stopped asking questions, stopped caring about his mysterious past, stopped anything that wasn't granting his master's wishes and returning immediately to his lamp. The voices in his head were cruel, and whispered to him constantly. Plum descended to the depths of madness many times and barely made it back out entirely.

One day, he was summoned before a new master. This in itself wasn't unusual, but what was strange was how this new master asked him for his name instead of going straight for a wish. Caught off guard, Plum spoke aloud for what was the first time in many years, and quickly found himself unable to process handling a master that wanted to speak with him more than make wishes. His new master was called Santiago, and he was a young Spaniard cabinboy on a ship bound for the New World. The two became something of friends, spending long nights together under the stars and just talking as the ship bobbed on the waves. Plum was easily overwhelmed by Santiago's friendliness and once broke down in tears, only to get a tentative hug from the kindhearted boy. This was the first contact Plum had had in nearly 300 years since he'd awoken in the cave, and it made him break down even more.

Plum quickly came to be fiercely protective of Santiago, taking to lingering outside of his lamp while visible only to his master to keep Santiago (and himself) company. Now that someone had chased away the quiet, he didn't want to go back to its embrace. He learned everything he could about the Spanish boy, and confessed to not knowing his own past from before he became a wish dragon. One night, Santiago asked him what made him happy, and Plum admitted that he didn't remember. His master suggested they find out, and Plum began to tell stories of faraway lands from times long ago that he couldn't quite explain why he knew. These stories had plenty of embellishments and magical touches with Plum dressing himself and Santiago in fanciful outfits, recreating the scenery around them, and even dramatic reenactments.

After the ship made landfall in the New World, Plum remained by Santiago's side for almost a year. His master never once wished for anything and admitted to not needing wishes, since he would have only wished for a friend and Plum already fulfilled that. Everything changed one night when there was a raid on the Spanish settlement by angry, resentful Natives, and Santiago was killed in the skirmish before Plum could step in. He clung to Santiago's body, weeping until daylight broke. Then he buried Santiago and retreated back into his lamp.

The Mad Merryman

Alone once more, it didn't take long for Plum to descend into a depressed madness once more, and this time he never truly returned. He began to listen to the voices that spoke to him, and turned to them when he wanted company. He vowed to never care about any of his masters again no matter how nice they might be, because the pain of losing someone made him feel like there was a gaping hole in his chest. tincidunt egestas.
