Historical Information

Xun Luhan is a character of fiction.

Xun Luhan was born in 168 as Xun Han and hailed from the Yingchuan Commandery as the son of Xun Su and the grandson of Minister of Works Xun Shuang. Although considered to be a very talented and intelligent child, he was quarrelsome and troublesome. He was often compared with his cousins Xun Yu and Xun You in terms of his demeanor, and despite his abilities, was disowned by his father in the year 181.

It was assumed that Xun Han had died off early after being disowned; but as it turns out he took to a life of banditry and thievery. He took on the name Lu Han and banded with the Heishan Bandits in the Taihang Mountains. Lu Han had taken to plundering and stealing books, many of which he had studied and interpreted to share to his brothers in arms. It was not unknown to them that Lu Han had come from a privileged background, and they often had Lu Han scout areas in the guise of a traveling nobleman.

Lu Han and the other Heishan Bandits fell into disagreement which led to Lu Han’s departure. It is said that Lu Han wished to return to a scholarly life, in which he was deemed fickle by his compatriots.

He was known to serve Yuan Shao by the year 189 and assisted him by helping him interpret texts he had difficulty understanding. Although a bandit, Yuan Shao acknowledged his scholarly pursuits and promoted him as an advisor. It was in his service to Yuan Shao that he reunited with his cousins Xun Yu and Xun Chen. Lu Han had debacles with his family about his disinheritance and his disappearance, and they had acknowledged that he was a fickle man with fickle desires. Such arguments had led Lu Han to decisively change his ways and learn to properly secure himself, and not settle for finding more lords to serve, as he will only make enemies that way.

Further discussions and debates with his cousin Xun Yu had led him to realize as well that Yuan Shao was not going to be a great man, and thus he left Yuan Shao’s service with his cousin in 191. He was introduced to Cao Cao as Xun Luhan, a prodigal son of the Xun Family and an indispensable help in driving off bandits as he understood their mindset and tactics. Cao Cao was intrigued by this introduction, and had the now named Luhan assist him in defending his territory. He was proven to be just as his cousin introduced him by helping Cao Cao repel the Heishan Bandits in the Dong Commandery, where he was then properly acknowledged as a part of Cao Cao’s forces.

Cao Cao called Xun Yu his own Zifang, and he valued the Xun family’s knowledge and wisdom. When Cao Cao learned that Xun Luhan assisted Yuan Shao by helping him interpret philosophical texts, he would come to Xun Luhan to give him insight on such matters, and his opinions on how he should reflect them. He gave Luhan his own troops, but Xun Luhan kindly requested for a smaller band of soldiers for him to train them in reconnaissance, which he highly preferred. As Cao Cao valued his opinions, he granted Xun Luhan a smaller band to work with.

In 200, Xun Luhan was Cao Cao’s main source of information in the battle at Guandu, and it was his advice to Cao Cao to ask Xun Yu for assistance in the depletion of supplies before they captured Wuchao.

In the coming years, Guo Jia had requested Xun Luhan to help him care for his son Guo Yi as an act of friendship between them. Guo Jia valued Xun Luhan’s prowess and wisdom, and felt his son would be secured in the hands of the Xun family. As a gesture of goodwill, Xun Luhan agreed to take in Guo Yi, turning him into his protege.

In 205, Xun Luhan helped Cao Cao gain the trust of the remaining Heishan Bandits in order for them to surrender to him as they further drove out Yuan Shao’s weakened forces. In 206, he took to doing reconnaissance for Cao Cao at the Battle of Chibi, in which he fell for Wu’s false reports and letters that led to their defeat. This, alongside Xun Yu’s disagreement with Cao Cao, had brought Xun Luhan to suspicion. In 211, in an attempt to clear his name, Xun Luhan participated in the Battle of Hefei in which he was in fact redeemed after bringing news that Sun Quan had retreated. His name and status were restored and he once again enjoyed his old privileges.

Xun Luhan died in 217 after his wounds and injuries from the battle of Xiaoyao Ford at Hefei failed to recover properly and became infected. He was buried with honors as General Xun Fuxiao of Wei. Guo Yi asked that he be buried with his father, Guo Jia.

Xun Luhan was reportedly known to be one of the longest living members of the Xun family, despite dying at 49 years old. Many of his relatives had died before reaching the age of 40, and he had no heir to his name.
