Historical Information

Tang Yifan is based off the historical Lady Tang, daughter to the eunuch Tang Heng and wife to Xun Yu. As per recorded history, Yifan bore all eight of Xun Yu's children.

Tang Yifan was born to a relieved lady-in waiting for the Empress. Her mother was cast out of the palace because of her pregnancy, and now homeless and sick, it was a miracle that Yifan was born healthy. Her biological mother died soon after, and Yifan was only lucky to be heard crying by a florist passing by. Having pity on the baby, the florist took the baby in and named her Yifan. Since then, it was a relatively normal life for both of them. Yifan’s adoptive mother was commissioned by the Empress to create a flower arrangement for one of her gatherings, and unable to leave the little girl alone, the florist took Yifan along with her to the Imperial Palace. Being a curious child, Yifan went around, and came across scholars who were reading scrolls in the library. She sat in and listened to them, and even if she was noticed by them, they didn’t allow her presence to disturb their studies. One of them even lent her a scroll so she could read and pass time, and told her she could return it before she left the palace. Yifan lost track of time, and before she realized, it was night. Scared, she wandered the hallways, calling for her mother. The palace was so huge, it was so easy for a child to get lost. Yifan, who has given up on finding her mother, cried. There, one of the Empress’ guards, a eunuch named Tang Heng, found her. Feeling pity for the girl, he offered to help her find whoever she was looking for. Of course, she was desperate to go back to her mother and back home. Tang Heng realizes that Yifan was carrying a scroll from the library, and asked her how she got it. She explained herself the best she could, and the Eunuch was interested in the fact that she simply stayed and listened, and even tried to read, unlike other children who would just run around and play. (It wasn’t like Yifan was allowed, she couldn’t play since her mother was busy.) Tang Heng brought Yifan to the florist, and before long, he negotiated with her to adopt Yifan instead, as he was interested in the fact that she tried to catch up to scholars. The florist declined at first, until Tang Heng offered a great price. Unable to decline money for herself, she took the money and left Yifan to Tang Heng, The florist told Yifan she was going to return soon, which never happened.

While Yifan “waited” for her mother to return, Tang Heng told the little girl to call him “father” from then on until her mother returned. Yifan, not wanting to feel lonely, agreed to do so. The next years of her life were quite extravagant and frivolous. Tang Heng was a very rich eunuch, and he only got richer with the money he stole and embezzled. He did his best to hide the fact he was stealing money, to not lose the trust of his child. Much of the riches he had, he used on making his new daughter happy. He did care deeply for Yifan, and whatever she wanted, he got for her. He simply had the riches to do so, and even threw parties for her and let her join in on his festivities, as well as letting her participate in the local festivals. Tang Heng paid scholars and tutors to educate Yifan, and Yifan gladly took in her education. Tang Heng also wanted to have something to brag about, hence why he was very serious about Yifan’s education. Eventually, Yifan even took up dancing and performing arts, to which she had a talent for, even at a young age. By the time Yifan was ten years old, Tang Heng had arranged her to Xun Fan’s son, Xun Yu. Yifan didn’t understand it yet, but Tang Heng had to tell her in time. He was aging, and he was getting weaker, as he adopted Yifan when he was already forty five years of age. For as long as Yifan was unaware of his corrupt deeds, he continued his ways to take money from other officials. He had to keep his riches to keep Yifan, his only daughter and child, safe.

When Yifan had turned thirteen, she was brought to the Xun household to meet her fiancé, only to be surprised that he was three years younger than her. However, he was intelligent and mature for his age, and Yifan spent time with him for the next two years before she had be married to him quite early. Her visit was cut short because her father had contracted an illness, and was expected to die soon. It was then Yifan discovered her father’s evil deeds and the lives he took away because of his slander. She was also looked upon with suspicion when she visited him again in his quarters. Feeling conflict, all the riches she was draped with was blood money, and the man she called father who loved her so much was a corrupt and evil man to others, while to her he was an angel. If it was the truth, she had to know. On her father’s deathbed, she begged him for the truth. Tang Heng knew he was dying, and he had no choice but to tell his daughter the truth. Angered and pained by the truth, Yifan stormed out, high in disbelief that her father was not a good man. Eventually, after his death, she inherited all his riches. Out of guilt, Yifan gave back to the people; however, part of her didn’t want to do so, and thus kept the rest of the money she had not donated as a secret. She continued her education when she lived in the Xun household, along with her fiancé. Despite her father’s reputation, she was welcomed by the Xun family, and that gave her her lively spirit back.

Upon Xun Yu beginning to reach manhood at age thirteen, it was when Yifan started throwing parties and celebrations, as well as buying things for her fiancé. The younger was taken aback by her actions, but he did appreciate the effort she gave for him. She spent the years in the Xun household enjoying her life and her time. There were, of course, officials who wanted to sully their name, and Yifan, knowing the family well, took it upon her to stop their slander. It was too late to realize she had actually taken over her father in his deeds, and she had killed enough people without even touching them to realize so. Yifan again, was torn over her own cunning she developed, but realized it would be a good thing to put it to use to keep her and her loved ones safe. She married Xun Yu in 179, when he was sixteen and she was nineteen. Despite the early marriage, they have been getting along harmoniously in the past years. They did not consummate their marriage until Yifan turned twenty one. It was then Yifan started to get creative with her ways of eliminating people who caused trouble to the family. She threw parties, attended festivals, learning to be stealthy and poisoning their food and drink, without raining much suspicion. Yifan knew she had gone too far, but she kept telling herself it was for the greater good. She also found ways to get money from others, and it nauseated her, but she couldn’t stop her guilty pleasures. Her husband never knew. At age twenty three, she gave birth to her first son, Xun Yun in 183. Year 185, she gave birth to her second son, Xun Yu, named after his father. By 187, Yifan gave birth to their third son, Xun Shen.

In the year 189, when her husband was nominated as a civil service candidate, she moved with him along with their sons. Soon after, when Dong Zhuo rose to power, Yifan fled with her husband and sons back to Ji Province. Eventually, for the next two years, she and her husband served under Yuan Shao. There, Yifan met an assassin, Xun Luhan, cousin to her husband and was pleased to see her husband so happy to meet his relative after a long time. It was also there where Yuan Shao had trouble with a few of his minor advisers and councilors, and to earn his trust, Yifan had about two of them killed. One by her own hand, and the other by slander. There, Luhan knew that Yifan had some cunning in her, and thought maybe, just maybe, she could teach her a thing or two. Xun Yu did not bat an eye to their activities, he was oblivious up until Yifan was gone for hours at a time at night. Consequently, he discovered that Luhan had been teaching Yifan self-defense and assassination. It caused some argument because Xun Yu could not possibly risk his wife’s life, and it was there that Yifan told him it wasn’t the first time she had killed people. She admitted in shame, and Xun Yu had no choice but to talk her through this, along with Luhan, whom he argued with separately. Yifan and Luhan also had quite an ambiguous friendship. In 191, Yifan again left with Xun Yu, along with Luhan to serve Cao Cao. She, at first, became a court lady, with having nothing to do, and learned the ways of court ladies. In 192, Yifan gave birth to Xun Biyu and Xun Fan, fraternal twins. Biyu was female, while Fan was male. Yifan remained in Xu Province to take care of her children, and in 195, she and her husband had Xun Kang, accidentally. Yifan became aware of her husband’s plans and activities, as well as his idea to have Cao Cao escort Emperor Xian to gain political advantage. As a spy, Yifan was sent to different regions to observe and report any suspicious activity, and if needed, eliminate rebellious personalities. Sometimes, she was sent to Shu or Wu to find officials. She returned to Xu province in 206 AD. I 207, she gave birth to fraternal twins again : Xun Yi, who would later marry Princess Nanyang, and the youngest son, Xun Can. She was miraculously pregnant at such an age, and was considered to be strong and impressive for a woman to even carry children in her 40s. Though the labor of birth made her body weaker, she still opted to work as a spy, and took off again by 209 AD, leaving her eldest children to care for the then two year old twins.

Though Yifan intended to be more politically involved, her husband barred her from debating and discussing in court. By all means this really exasperated Yifan, as she was raised and trained to be fit for the court and discussing with ministers. She had no idea why her husband woulf even bar her, when he himself praised her for her intellect and communication skills. While it made so sense to Yifan, she was too blinded by her own frustration to see that her husband was trying to protect her. It was difficult for Xun Yu, but he was able to force Yifan to keep to her duties as an assassin and spy. It left a bitter taste in Yifan that no matter what she did, Xun Yu always tried to keep her away.

Yifan began to become conflicted when Xun Yu opposed Dong Zhao’s proposal in 211. It all became clear to her then that her husband was still loyal to the Han despite pledging alliegance to Cao Cao. She knew that it would get her husband into trouble, and she knew she was also going to take a blow from it. She also knew that Xun Yu’s suggestion greatly displeased Cao Cao, and he knew that as well. Yifan, who had become a spy for Wei in the subsequent years, also raised suspicion to Cao Cao. She was separated from her husband for a few months at a time while she was doing her work and doubling her work having her children tutored. When she heard that her husband was to be sent to Qiao to reward soldiers who took part in a campaign against Sun Quan, she followed him there. Xun Yu was pleased to see his wife again, but Yifan knew that something wasn’t right. Eventually, she received a very private letter of blackmail, stating that if she didn’t eliminate her own husband, all her children will be executed. This put Yifan in a flurry of despair. She had to weigh the lives of her husband and her children, and she wondered what would be her “reward” if she complied. She wanted to live, she wanted her husband to live, but god forbid, she would never risk the lives of her children. Eventually, she came to a decision and poison her husband. She put small amounts of poison in his food and drink, and he never knew. When Xun Yu became ill, Yifan stopped poisoning him, and hid her grief behind her usual smile. She followed him to Shuochun, where he died in 212 AD. Later on, Cao Cao rewarded Yifan with a rank and she had officially become an officer under him. She was also guaranteed better livelihood and positions in the office for her children. Yifan couldn’t take the grief from killing her own husband. Her children never knew what she did, even if they knew that she was sad.

She retired from the battlefield, and became a court lady as well as a mentor for the few assassins who served under Cao Cao. Because she still was looked upon with doubt, Yifan was still not allowed to participate in court. That; however, did not stop her from doing debates with scholars. She also supervised training for the foot soldiers, performed instrumentals for court performances, and taught young aspiring court performers. Yifan became ill in 220 AD, and she only got worse during the winter, where she died of hypothermia in her sleep.
