Appearance

Overall

Thorne is a tall, strong man standing at 6'8 with a muscular build and many scars and tattoos scattered over his freckled skin. He has wavy dark hair that falls around his shoulders and upper back, shot through with streaks of gray, and a short beard. His heavy-lidded eyes are a pale stormy gray, and he has a straight nose that has been broken at least once in his life. Part of his hair is left loose and the other side is braided close to his head, giving the impression of an undercut. His fingers are tipped with claws made of the same starmetal as his insert, which is shaped like a horn and placed on one side of his forehead, and his cor is damascus steel.

Scars and Distinctive Features

In the center of his torso is a y-shaped incision, which can open to allow him to remove his heart from his chest. Next to this incision, directly above his heart, is an area where he was once branded, which he removed with a knife as soon as he could, leaving a mess of scar tissue. The ring and pinky finger on his left hand are missing. He has multiple bullet, cut, and blast scars over his body, one of which took a chunk out of his right thigh and left him with a slight limp. There is a knife scar on his right cheek. Thin scars encircle his wrists from an encounter where he was chained up and rubbed his wrists raw trying to escape, and the long scars on his back were left by a whip.

As well as scars, Thorne has multiple tattoos. On the front of his neck is a compass rose, and on the left side of his stomach is a lighthouse encircled by tentacles. "Dead men tell no tales" and "hold fast" are written in sailor scrawl on his right hipbone and the knuckles of both his hands respectively. On his back over the whip scars is a large tattoo of an anchor, also wrapped with a tentacle.

Clothes and Accessories

Thorne prefers clothing that doesn't get in his way, always ready for a fight, and holds a special fondness for things that show his chest and, by extension, allow him easy access to his heart and therefore his weapon.. His usual outfit consists of a loose white shirt with long sleeves with lacing on the chest that he leaves open. He wears a blue sash around his waist underneath a leather belt from which multiple pouches and a couple knives hang. These pouches hold small grenades and smoke bombs as well as a lighter and a folding telescope along with other things that could be useful to him. His forearms are wrapped with leather bracers, hiding two more small knives beneath them. He wears tight black pants and black leather boots that stretch up to his mid-calf, secured with straps and laces. The leather of his boots hide yet again more knives, and the toes are steel-tipped internally. His ears are pierced in multiple places and decorated with gold rings. His braids are also decorated with small gold rings. He wears three things around his neck at all times - a compass on a cord, a chain with his wedding ring, and a locket that contains a picture of his husband.

Personality

Thorne is a man who is a little wild and almost feral at times, completely unafraid of violence. He's a very straightforward and blunt person and therefore tends to prefer solving problems with violence as opposed to diplomacy, mostly because he generally doesn't have the patience for diplomacy. Despite what some may think, Thorne is not a stupid man. He is quite intelligent and is capable of brilliant strategies, but his temper and impulses often get the best of him. He doesn't easily build attachments with other people, keeping strangers at arms length, but when he does get attached he's a highly loyal and devoted person. He tends to be very protective and almost possessive of his loved ones and enjoys giving them gifts.

Among these loved ones are the members of his crew of unbleeders, who he views as a sort of family. He cares deeply about freedom, both for himself and other people, and displays a surprising level of empathy; despite Thorne's tendency towards violence, he actively holds himself back when fighting humans in an attempt to avoid permanently injuring them.

Thorne is a mysterious figure around Caer Sidi and the surrounding area, and people outside his crew and his friends don't know anything about him other than stories and rumors. He has a reputation as a violent and ruthless man who won't hesitate to kill for his goals and, while this is true to an extent, his reputation is exaggerated.

Abilities

Intelligence

Thorne never finished school, dropping out of high school in his freshman year. People often underestimate his intelligence because of this and his preference for violence over diplomacy, but Thorne is in fact quite intelligent. When he feels like it he can formulate brilliant plans and strategies in the blink of an eye, he just doesn't see the point in doing so most of the time. In addition, he has a very high degree of "street smarts" and survival skills that he doesn't hesitate to use.

Combat

If there's one thing everyone knows about Thorne, it's his skill in combat. He favors a very aggressive and overwhelming fighting style full of powerful blows designed to disarm and incapacitate his opponent quickly. He favors bladed weapons like his saber and the multitude of knives hidden on his person, but he has no qualms about using other types of weaponry, or even simple hand-to-hand combat. He's very skilled in multiple fighting styles and can often be found training and honing his skills. Aside from his saber and knives he carries small grenades and smoke bombs, a lighter, and a pistol. He fights very fluidly, switching between weapons and styles easily.

Unbleeder Abilities

As an unbleeder (formally known as Calon Ddi-Waed), Thorne has the ability to remove his heart through the slit in the center of his chest. His heart stays connected through an infinite chain of starmetal. After being removed from his chest his heart can transform into his signature saber at will. His pupils dilate to fill the whole eye, improving low-light vision, and the removal of his heart is accompanied by a loss of compassion, allowing him to operate at maximum capacity without hesitation due to fear or worry.

Story

As a young teenager, following the death of his parents when he was 13, Thorne fell in with the wrong crowd and ended up essentially blackmailed and forced into servitude by a powerful gang in his home city. When he was 17, after years of waiting and planning, Thorne seized his chance and killed the leader of the gang before escaping, wandering for a while and slowly working to build up his own crew, consisting of people he could trust to be loyal to him. His base of operations settled just outside of Caer Sidi eventually as him and his crew claimed a network of sea caves as their headquarters, an easily fortified and defendable space where they dock when they aren't out at sea.

At 36 years old, however, Thorne was betrayed. Raphael, the man who had been his trusted right hand for over a decade murdered him, driving a knife deep into his heart before signing his body over to the Llawes corporation who then revived him as an unbleeder in exchange for his service. When Thorne awoke and realized what had happened he flew into a rage, the situation reawakening old trauma from his teenage years. He escaped from Llawes and returned to his ship and crew. Thorne and Raphael, now captain, fought, Thorne's first battle with his heart out. In the fray Raphael was knocked over the edge of the ship into the water below. Thorne returned his heart to his chest and dove after him, but it was too late to save him, and Raphael died in his arms on the shore. He had never meant to kill him, but rumor spread and twisted the story until it was commonly believed that Thorne had returned for revenge and drowned his former right hand in cold blood.

Horrified by the loss of freedom a contract with Llawes entails, Thorne swore to do everything in his power to disrupt their operations, attacking their supply ships and stealing materials on both land and sea.

Relationships

Lover

Riley: Riley is one of the only people in the world who claim truly claim to hold Thorne's love and devotion. In fact, he is the only person aside from Thorne himself who can hold his heart when it's out of his chest. They met a couple years before Thorne was killed, and had entered a relationship in the year before his murder. Unknown to either of them, it's likely that this relationship was one of the final straws that led Raphael to murder the captain. When Thorne disappeared one day, Riley was distraught, afraid that he had been abandoned by the man. Riley was the first person Thorne told the whole story of his death and revival, in the captain's cabin after the accidental killing of Raphael; in that cabin Thorne promised Riley that he would never leave him again. Two years after Thorne's resurrection, they were married. Riley serves as Thorne's advisor in all but name, a quiet but influential force on the ship. He often tempers Thorne's more violent and ruthless impulses, softening him in an unprecedented way and often pushing him to consider situations more thoroughly and approach them in a more strategic manner.

Riley is Thorne's home, the one he always returns to and the one who grounds him, who makes him better as a person. He cherishes Riley, wearing his wedding ring and a locket with Riley's picture close to his heart at all times. The two live together in the captain's quarters on the Tempest, Riley having joined the crew fully following their marriage.
