Kobato Himura (緋村 小鳩 Himura Kobato) is an outcast from the Human Village who is the lover of Merlot Carmen. They are the final boss of Nocturne Melodrama.

Concept

Their casual clothes and wedding attire reference pigeons and doves respectively, the casual one referencing a Luzon bleeding-heart dove in particular.

Name

Their full name is Kobato Himura. Ko means "small", while bato means "pigeon" or "dove". When put together it means "small pigeon/dove".

Himura is spelled with the kanji for scarlet/dark red (hi), while mura means "town" or "village".

Notable Relationships

Merlot Carmen

Kobato fell in love with Carmen when they met due to their kindness and immunity to their ability, and ended up becoming their lover. Because of their close relationship, Kobato is fully dedicated to them and will do anything for them.

Michel Nightingale

While Michel treated them poorly, Kobato remained fairly polite to them up until they attempted to overthrow Carmen, where they then tried to stand up to and stop them. Due to Michel's abilities, they end up being forced to fight for them in a last ditch effort to take out the heroes.

Official Profile

An outcast from the Human Village who has the power to intensify and manipulate any emotion.

Majority of the humans in Mugenri don't possess any powers so Kobato was an unusual case. Ever since they were born they could manipulate the emotions of others, including their own. They could either intensify existing ones or alter them entirely, and in other cases they could fire them off as a burst of energy when they became overwhelming. But unfortunately Kobato had no control over it, so their powers activated and affected others at random, forcing them to either feel something else entirely or feel too much.

This lead to the people of the village fearing that power and in turn Kobato. Wherever they went drew unease from everyone who saw them. Over time Kobato themself came to fear their own power and the lack of control over it only worsened due to that fear. They tried to suppress all emotion from themself and started going out less and less to avoid the stigma, but it only made them feel more like a burden, depressed and full of self loathing. And that also ended up getting imposed on the people around them. That was when they made up their mind and decided to leave the village to keep their powers from affecting anyone else.

For a few years they lived alone in a small house in the forest, far away from the village and other humans. Youkai around the area never bothered them either as their power had also scared them off. Kobato hoped that having absolutely no one around would lead to their ability waning over time. But their negative feelings continued to linger along with their power. The isolation only made them steadily grow even more depressed as while no one could feel those emotions, Kobato alone suffered from them instead. And that despair started to drive them to suicide just to escape from it.

That was until they met Carmen, or rather Carmen met them.

So driven by despair, Kobato wandered into the Overshadowed Valley, a place where no human treads due to the aggressive youkai within it, no longer caring about their life. Despite their fear of youkai, they deliberately sought them out. A youkai, just any youkai, to put them out of their misery. And Carmen was first to attack them. Kobato made no effort to save themself, piquing Carmen's curiosity enough to release them and ask why they wouldn't try to stop them. When Kobato wistfully told them their power made them this way, Carmen actually expressed sympathy for their plight and spared them. Were they also enthralled by their power? From what Kobato saw, there was nothing on this youkai's face that indicated such. Nothing forced them to sympathize with them or anything: it was genuine, and of their own volition. Something that Kobato thought they'd never actually see or feel from someone else.

They desperately wanted to see Carmen again so they started going out more often to meet up. The empathy and company completely uplifted Kobato from their despair and made them feel loved, and even forget about their power. They spent so much time with Carmen that they started to fall in love with them and wanted them to stay together forever. They didn't want to lose the only person who could love them and be left alone again, so they clinged to them, willing to do anything to keep them by their side, even if it meant throwing away their humanity.

But Carmen never turned them into a youkai, even when Kobato asked for it. They teased them occasionally, but Carmen ultimately refused as they liked Kobato as is. Such a choice couldn't be taken back either, along with the fact Tsurubami was greatly feared by and oppressed the youkai.

When Kobato had heard rumors about Tsurubami no longer being in Mugenri, they felt they had a chance to finally show Carmen how much they loved them and wanted to "complete" their relationship. They made one last trip to the village and dressed for the occasion as they ran off into the valley to Carmen's chateau. But they had no idea what had transpired inside between their beloved and one of the residents of the house. This led to them being attacked and locked up in a room by Michel.

But they refused to let this keep them down, and even though they can't fight, they tried to get out to find and save Carmen.
