Chikai /chee-ka-ee/

Chi (friends)

She/he/they

Pansexual

Astrolotl

Living in the midcloud layer, Chikai spends her time exploring both the clouds and the land below. She has lots of small dens, migrating often between them, though she prefer to stay around the magicsky fields, on the ground, due to the groundlike cloud life.

Though they like exploring and making friends, they're sort of skittish, though much more at ease around other feral creatures. While they usually come off as harmless and innocent, they have a surprisingly fearless, mischievous, daredevilish side that comes forward - hopefully - when they feel comfortable around someone. However, it's more often seen when they're faced with danger, as they developed this nature by living in the sky among much bigger, more dangerous creatures.

Beforetimes

He lived mostly alone in the clouds until adulthood, staying in a system of big, fluffy rainclouds. Being only the size of a medium dog, he had to learn how to avoid bigger sky creatures and navigate the clouds, Going above and beyond to learn how to fight despite his species typically only defending themselves by playing dead. Once he had fully grown and become a strong flyer, he started venturing out further, eventually finding his way to the magicsky region and coming down to explore the forest; He decided that he liked it there, and while he often returns to the sky or even goes to live on the lakebottom, he considers the forest his home.

Species info
Body (Mammal?)

Astrolotls appear to be mammalian, with bodies covered in thick fur and "feathers", but lay eggs like axolotls and don't have breasts, so it's unclear what to classify them as. They're about the size of a corgi or small fox. They have stocky builds compared to axolotls, with thicker legs and body, and very short but dense for that protects them from cold and wind. Their frills aren't gills, but sensory organs like antennae that use specialized feathers to detect wind currents and scents, as well as help with steering while flying. Their tails are used mostly for flight, the thick fur ridges used to propel them, but the fur that extends up their back to their neck ruff is also protection against weather, as they cover themselves with their tails to sleep. Their front feet have thumbs, and each toe has a blunt, softish claw used for digging in clouds and paw pads that store and control the magic that allows them to fly. Their eyes are exceptional, but their vision can easily be confused by light pollution or many bright lights. Because of their acclimation to absurd altitudes, they can hold their breath for long enough that they can also live underwater. They can live a very long time, maturing within about ten years and regenerating their bodies as they wear, even regrowing limbs like axolotls do.

Magic (air/light?)

Being wingless creatures of flight, astrolotls are very magical creatures, relying on magic to fly and live among the clouds. The magic used for flight is stored throughout their body, but concentrated in their paw pads, allowing them to levitate and propel themselves with their tails and frills. However, they have another general magic, stored in their neck shines, that most often appears a light magic when untrained. It can be channeled into other kinds of magic, frequently water, fire or air, but it's typically only used to produce bursts of bright, sparkling light to confuse predators. Their bodies are known to change color depending on the time of day, though most don't change color completely, usually only gaining a warm color at sunset or visible glowing starry spots in their tail and frills.
