Overview: The Gutter

The Gutter is its own city within Junction City. It is a self-sustained prison with no police and no laws or regulations where territory is fought for and killed over. The occupants are left entirely to their own devices, making the Gutter rampant with crime that goes completely unnoticed by the rest of Junction.

There are multiple reasons that one may find themselves living in the Gutter. The most common reason is being sentenced here based on crimes committed outside the prison walls. Another is living at or below the poverty level, as it is much easier to send the homeless here to die rather than allowing them to live on the streets. One may also be born in the Gutter, or even smuggled in from outside the prison’s borders, however, it is incredibly difficult to do this because of guards patrolling the walls.

Either way, no matter how someone ends up here, they are expected to either find a way to survive, or die and be forgotten about. Now, it is possible to leave the Gutter legally by paying off one’s sentence by means of working in coal mines, but few have actually ever managed to do this, simply because most find it to be be a hazard in it’s own right, and a waste of time.

Escaping the prison via breaching its walls is also considered a fool’s errand, since the borders are guarded by sentries. These sentries aren’t normal dolls either, but a sub-species known as Rippers. They are twice the size of an average-sized doll, with four long, gangly metal appendages attached to their spine, giving them a spider-like appearance. The appendages are commonly topped with metal hooks, but other weapons may be used instead. Queen Europa uses Rippers at her disposal, as they are integrated heavily amongst the doll population in Junction.

Most occupants of the prison have come to thrive in it by joining or forming their own gangs. These groups usually offer particular services to those who can either afford to buy them or offer something valuable in exchange. These services can range from smuggling drugs or weapons, assassinations, trafficking, and so on and so forth. If it can be thought of, there’s probably someone within the Gutter that can provide it.

Annelise [ girlfriend ]

He met Annelise for the first time when her parents hired him to be her temporary bodyguard. Despite their differences in upbringing and lifestyle (Annelise belonging to a wealthy family while Luka practically lived on the street) they shared a lot in common and got along just as well as any teenagers looking for trouble.

During their time together Luka was able to show Anne all sorts of new things, and it wasn't long before he developed a crush on her. The last thing he expected was for her to reciprocate his feelings though, and at times he still can't believe she's his girlfriend.
