Crown Prince Aquilus

A long time ago, the dashing young crown prince of the Quili nation married the Princess Royale of the Ronan nation, forever uniting the two kingdoms into the largest existing mermaid empire. The two young royals fell in love over the years and had several children together. The Crown Prince rode at the helm of his army, inspiring fear in his enemies nad patriotism in his troops. When a rebel army attacked the empire's capital, the Crown Prince was chosen to lead the troops in defence of their homes. An evacuation was conducted under his citadel and he managed to save the majority of the residents. Whilst the Crown Prince was in battle, and the Princess Royale was overseeing the evacuation, the children were kidnapped along with his best friend. During the battle, the Crown Prince recieved news that his children had been murdered and in his rage, he joined his army in slaughtering all the rebels. As the last of the rebels fell, Aquilus was stabbed by a poisoned lance from behind and he turned to see his best friend. Not kidnapped as he thought, but the betrayer. His best friend stabbed him again and cruelly taunted him over the fact that his children would become slaves and playthings for him. Aquilus was enraged at this and gathering his life force, forced out a magical wave that destroyed the forms of himself and his best friend whilst offering a magical protection to his city. When the Princess learned of the treachery, and the death of her husband, she did not wait for officials to take action. As a Princess of the Ronan Tribe, she was trained in battle like all Ronan females, and went charging off to rescue her children. Her children were rescued physically unharmed and she laid her husband to rest in a state funeral. Not only is Aquilus honored as a hero, he is worshipped and invoked as a patron god.  The Princess subsequently vowed to never take another husband and took her children to Solas to live. She became the Ambassador and Liason for the mermaids habitating Solas, and raised her children in peace. 

The legend of brave Prince Aqilus is told to youngling mermaids, and all remember the sacrifice and betrayal that befell their beloved prince.
