"is his name askr or ask" its both; it's supposedly ask because it refers to both askr (norse) and asklepios/asclepius (greek) but i ended up changing the official spelling to askr due to sheer awkwardness when introducing "ask" to other people [a tragedy of the english language]

A cold blooded mercenary hired by a distant land's ruler to take out the global threat [the Movement] from beheading more sovereigns.
In the past, Askr was a renowned scholar of the human flesh and mind. His research was critically acclaimed across educational institutes in the world, and his books were used as study material by many disciplines.
One day prior to the beginning of the story, the professor vanished without a word, leaving a big hole in the academic world.
Now, he unexpectedly reappears in the battlefield years later.

Prior to the story, Askr was a kind hearted professor who's works were recognized by a large number of schools. He was the type of person to patiently answer each student's questions despite his busy schedule.
After disappearing and re-emerging as a hired killer, Askr becomes much more muted with little expressions. He does not seem too interested in doing dirty work nor is he against dirtying his hands. No one knows his current motive in becoming an assassin, nor why he left the academic society.
[From Arca's perspective, he is pained to see the professor he idolized becoming such a cold person...]

Serpent PhysiologyDespite the human-like appearance, Askr's body functions has morphed to resemble a snake, though not all features are present. The only external proof of his serpent-like qualities (which he tries to hide) is the snake scales on his neck. Also much like reptiles, he sheds skin which allows him to retain a youthful appearance.

Askr was a brilliant doctor who reformed medicine as we know it today. He wrote much about different types of drugs and naturally available resources. But that's not what makes him admirable--he was also an intellect for more abstract things, questioning the philosophy of life itself. In daily life he was very pragmatic and did things as is, but his writings reflected the true part of his mind: he delved into territories that made you contemplate the varying aspects of life and death, arts, letters, and society. When (Arca) first read Askr's works, it felt like finding a treasure chest. The sheer excitement (he) felt from flipping each page... it was a memorable moment for the youth. His non-medicine writings sold much less, making it very hard to find copies of such books. (He) has a full collection of the professor's works though.
It was devastating to learn that the professor went missing from his own residence. No one had seen him; many speculated he had died somewhere. (Arca) continued to believe that he was still alive somewhere--just not... like this.

Present day, the professor reappears in the battlefield as a mercenary hired to stop the Movement--to behead Arcadium's neck.
To behead the sovereign and to behead the rebellion. Pit together in such a state, the two are destined to face each other until two becomes one.

Askr sees a gush of blood coming out of his skin -- and then a flash of lightheadedness engulfs him. The last thing he sees is the hands of the person who ended him.

He reawakens in an unfamiliar cabin with a stench of disinfectants across his body. He'd read literature of the river of the dead, and the blazing inferno for the sinners, or even the mystical Heavens he knows he had no place in, but none of those seems to reflect the place he is in.
When he sees the tall brunet, eyes puffed out with unstable steps, closing in to the bed Askr lies on, for once, he realizes he is alive.
Much to anyone's dismay, when he is pinned down by the same man who destroyed | saved his life, he does not escape and takes the man in.

A growing scent of burning awakens him from his rest. It inches closer with every minute. He takes it as a sign to not overstay his welcome.
Before the brunet awakes from the drugs that puts him to rest, the white snake slithers away from his hiding spot.
He reaches the burning spot he yearns for.
And there he is finally together with the all-consuming blaze.
Alternatively: after Askr is defeated by Arca, he is saved from death due to Arca's refusal to kill him. Arca confesses his feelings for Askr, whose love he does not deny. They arrive at the end of a sentimental journey [...have sex]. He drugs Arca with sleeping pills so Arca wouldn't be awake when he leaves the next morning. When dawn comes, he leaves a message behind and returns to ashes [burns himself down] under an old tree along with Embla.
Trivia
- He has two names. Both means "ash tree".
- The first name is officially spelled as Askr but can also be written as Asc. The Japanese phonetic spelling is アースク.
- The other name is 白蠟樹 (Báilà Shù).
- His snake motif symbolizes two things:
- Typically speaks in a hushed tone out of old habit, but has learned to speak loud and clear without raising his voice over time.
- He is ridiculously strong despite his appearance. Won't hesitate to break your nose.
- He employs various of snakes for both their poison (typically mixes poison to food/ drinks) and venom (directly lets the snakes bite his target).
- The white snake that is usually on his shoulder is neither poisonous nor venomous. Her name is Embla.
- He is fond of sung poetry (songs). He often stops his tracks to listen to public performances from the very back of the crowd.
- He is weak to the cold and travels to warmer climates in the winter.
- Has a fascination towards fire (and ash). Despite the benefits fire bring for mankind, he understands that the blaze consumes all. He used to teach people to fear the flames.
- (Personal note) He uses Chinese proverbs in his speech from time to time (Arca only recognizes half of it).
- (Personal note) Out of all of the cast, Sherry is the only one who's second life is not modern AU. (Modern AU is his third life.)
