Because of this, the people around her will usually gravitate towards her when in need of comfort or advice. Despite her tranquility, however, she refuses to merely smile in the face of insults no matter who they’re sent from - & while she doesn’t do it often, she’s blessed with the intimate knowledge of how to use her fists thanks to her mother.
Growing up in the spotlight since a mere tot, she’s rather used to her famous family sending paparazzi & press by the dozen in her direction. She does fairly well with them, but due to their presence, she’s become unfortunately aware of just how far people might go in order to increase their social standing in the world, & how many might attempt to use her in order to do so. That said, despite any difficulty with trust she might have developed due to a variety of experiences & circumstances, she has a very close knit group of friends whom she sticks close to & trusts with her absolute life, all of whom happen to be family friends that she’s been with since birth.
Still, she makes every attempt to be as cordial as possible to those outside of her comfort zone, & as per her dear uncle’s advice, strives to keep an open mind so that she may always be surrounded by others & not accidentally close herself off to potential new friends the way that he & her father did as children. More than that, however, she does it because despite the vast amounts of ways she’s seen people try to use her, she truly believes that there are still as many out there who won’t, & she’s rather excited to find them. She knows better than anyone what a difference Ouran Academy made in the lives of both of her parents after all, & the ways in which it not only brought them together for a lifetime, but the rest of their makeshift` family ` as well. Eager as can be, she can’t wait to meet & form her own alongside all of her favorite people.

She was always treated like a princess in her household, & the both of them took extreme care with each & every decision they made regarding her. For example, the nursery: her father wanted a far more feminine & regal look inspired by modernismo & the Palau de la Musica Catalana, but her mother wanted something gender-neutral & minimalistic. They compromised on an elegant vintage chic with chandeliers & long stretching windows in shades of creme, gray, & white. The decorative accessories & furniture were all provided by an acquaintance & business partner of her grandmother, Jaime Hayon, as well as a small fountain that her father convinced her mother to allow, modeled after the one at The Patio de los Leones at Alhambra Palace.
She’s also always been in the spotlight. Her social media following was record-breaking before she’d even had her fifth birthday, & her father had never been shy about revealing her to the public eye, even despite his protectiveness in other areas. She’s always enjoyed it, & because she’s been so well spoken from such a young age, all of Japan was quick to fall in love with her. Other nations around the world as well, their inhabitants tracking her appearances from social media updates to global fashion week.
This didn’t change as she grew, though she began to appreciate privacy & anonymity more than she had when younger, & often takes extended breaks from social media & public appearances. It must be said, however, that she’s never missed a single one of her father’s fashion shows. They are, after all, incredibly close.
Like her father & uncle before her, she was enrolled in Ouran Academy from Kindergarten onwards, though unlike them she took to it right away, & absolutely loves it. To her, it feels wonderful to get to go to school with her cousins & the rest of her extended ` family ` . & after growing up while hearing about all of the memories of misadventures that her parents & their friends got into during their time attending the facilities, she’s nothing short of ecstatic about having the chance to make her own.

Born beautiful enough to stop traffic, her locks are her father’s: like the colors of blooming poppies & her eyes are her aunt’s: the delight of a blue midsummer’s sky. Her physique is petite, though hides strength & muscle behind skin the slightest bit kissed by sun, with lush pink sakura petals lingering in the shades of her cheeks. She is all that is lovely: warm & exuberant with bright smiles from ear to ear, the most cherished of shining constellations amongst a star-scattered sky.

Ruika, despite having parents who each have a whole host of untreated mental illnesses, was very lucky in that she won the genetic lottery in a big way. There are a few things that she inherited, but none so severe that they inhibit her day-to-day functioning. These include:

✵ For a long time, Ruika was a very two-dimensional character. I had her name & her most basic stats all figured out, but that was it. She was a lovechild & nothing more. But one day I got to thinking about how interesting it could be to develop some of my next generation kids a bit more. & who better to start with than the first one I ever created? I think that I’m pretty happy with how she came out.
✵ In her family, I think that Ruika is definitely a person who unites people. Rei & Kaoru have both alienated more than their fair share of family members over the years, but their daughter has a good personality & is beloved by the people around her. I think that she’d probably teach them both to adjust the way they perceive certain people & try to be a little bit more accepting of their family - or even forgiving. At the very least, she gets them to socialize a bit more.
✵ I like to think that Ruika’s name was a compromise between Rei & Kaoru, & that she’s meant to be named after the most important people to them. She shares the sound of the hiragana “ru” or る with her Aunt Haruhi ( though Haruhi spells her name in katakana with ル rather than る, the enunciation is the same ) & she shares “ka” or か with her Uncle Hikaru when his name is simplified from it’s kanji spelling. The “i” or い connects the two, but Kaoru likes to say it was chosen on purpose for Rei whose name is also spelled with it, since he himself also shares か with Hikaru when his own name is simplified from its kanji form, so technically she has his name as well.
