Appearance

Isabelle is a slight woman, slim and as delicate looking as one would expect from a princess. She stands just about 5'0” even and weighs about 105 lbs (easily tossed over one's shoulder and hauled off, if one were so inclined. And she were inclined to let you.) Her figure doesn't lend itself at all to child bearing in fact, with small B-cup breasts and narrow hips. Her skin is pale and for the most part, nearly blemish free. A closer look at her hands and forearms show the many marks of her practicing the various crafts and talents pushed upon her by her station, and others she's picked up of her own volition. Her cheeks are almost constantly dusted with a faint bit of pink, though it's likely make up rather than anything natural.

Her hair is thick and brown, falling in lazy wavy-curls, but prone to picking up bits of whatever is laying around. Isabelle has no hopes of ever hiding if she had done something as uncouth as laying around in the grass of the gardens, or climbing a tree. Bits of Ziroh's fur often end up entangled in her locks. When left free, her hair would likely end about mid-way down her back, but being that she's a princess, most of the time it's forced up into ridiculous (in her humble opinion), intricate fashions. She'd much rather shove it into a ponytail or bun to keep the mess out of the way. Her eyes are fern green, or so, and tend to be very bright and active, flitting to whatever caught her attention at the moment.

Isabelle herself tends to prefer to wear shades of blue and incredibly simple attire (just plain blue robes, trimmed perhaps in gold are fine in her book), though of course for appearances sake, and her family's pushing, the princess often finds herself in much more complicated attire than that.

Personality

For the most part, Isabelle is a relatively quiet woman who would much prefer to be left to her own devices and books. Unfortunately, being that she's a princess, she is rarely afforded that luxury. Balls and parties are something to be suffered through, and her primary entertainment in such environs is seeing how insulting she can get away with being before someone actually catches on to what she's doing by disguising her words with wit and flowery speech. Or surrounds herself with the younger children of nobles and courtiers, as she finds them much more tolerable than their adult counterparts. Her patience for children is boundless, particularly compared to her lack thereof for their parents.

Isabelle's greatest joy is learning, and while she enjoys learning from books, she would much rather learn through experience. Not that she gets to do so often.

Backstory

From the time of Isabelle's birth, the princess has been doted on. While her parents had already produced two male scions, a little girl to bestow their love upon was seen as a great treasure. Unfortunately, there were some ill-omens about the child's birth, that would be safely mostly ignored for her younger years. She was born on the Feast of the Moon, a holiday celebrated to honor ancestors and the respected dead of the region. And thus she was named Isabelle, after the supposed first queen of Dawncairn, far back in her father's line. The unfortunate other side to this being that the Feast was also known as the Rising of the Dark for worshipers of the goddess Shar.

The Mistress of Night had been setting in motion some rather impressive plans, culminating in a ritual the night of Isabelle's birth. The ritual was intended to be used to help Shar herself recreate a portion of the Shadow Weave, making it easier for her followers to utilize the shadow magics they had once been capable of. The ritual was, quite fortunately, interrupted by followers of Mystra and Selûne, and the plan was foiled. For the most part. When Shar's connection to the ritual was severed, some portion of her influence and power failed to return to the Shadowfell where it belonged. Instead, it was trapped on the Material Plane, and sought a place with a connection to Shar to try to return to the Shadowfell. The worshipers of Shar present at the ritual had all been cut off from their connection to Shar and the Shadowfell when the Mistress of Night saw that things weren't going her way, and so the splinter had to reach further to find some connection to the rest of the whole.

Isabelle ended up being that connection. Far back in the line of Hightower, an ancestor had made a deal with Shar. The ancestor had a secret that they did not want anyone to know about, and entrusted it to the Lady of Loss to keep anyone from discovering it. Shar essentially made the mortal a shadow, of sorts, and hid almost literally everything they had ever done. Despite this being long, long ago, and obviously forgotten about by this point in time, the Hightowers still had a connection back to Shar in their very blood and souls. And so, the splinter hid within the newborn princess, going dormant for most of Isabelle's childhood.

Isabelle's birth was rough on her mother, and so she didn't bear another child until several years after Isabelle was born.

There is honestly very little of much interest or renown that's occurred in Isabelle's history, at least up until her father, Zachariah, and her mother, Katerina, started trying to find a noble enough match for the first daughter of their family. Isabelle herself had no interest in almost any of the options the two had presented, and Zachariah and Katerina didn't really want to force the girl into marrying someone she didn't like. She wasn't heir to the throne, so getting her married off wasn't as imperative as it might have been had she been next in the line of succession. Isabelle herself would have much rather spent her days reading and laying about with the lynx one of her uncles had brought for her as a present years ago.

Eventually Isabelle and her parents reached an agreement. The princess would concoct a series challenges for her potential suitors to attempt. Whoever completed the challenges would be taken as Isabelle's partner. The challenges themselves were quite difficult, and thus far no one has been able to complete all of the challenges set, and some have died in their attempts. An intrepid soul Isabelle had taken a liking to (a Goliath woman named Inavea Truthpicker Kaatho-Olageana) was the first to point out that the contract that Zachariah and Katerina had signed allowed for non-nobles to attempt the challenges. More... worrying for the king and queen was that there was nothing in the contract that said the suitor even had to be a human male.

Inavea's attempt looked promising, though Isabelle had attempted to dissuade Inavea from attempting it, not wanting to lose her friend. Unfortunately, Inavea failed and was, in fact, killed in her attempt.

It seems that whenever someone gets close to finishing the challenges, something terrible befalls them. Rumors have started to float around about the entire thing being cursed. A few folks have even hinted at the family's potential connection to Shar, but for the most part Zachariah has tried to keep the rumors quieted and quelled.

Powers/Abilities

Darkvision

A side-effect of Isabelle's connection to Shar, Isabelle is capable of seeing in dim light as if it were fully lit and darkness as if it were dimly lit, though in darkness everything appears as shades of grey.

Shadow Manipulation

Shadows seem to act a little strangely around Isabelle. They dance a bit of their own accord and seem to reach towards the princess.

Eidetic Memory

While this doesn't apply to literally everything, Isabelle's memory is impressive, especially when it comes to having seen someone perform magic. While she can't perform magic herself, she can recall precisely how a caster performs a spell if she sees it.

Trivia

  • Isabelle is quite dexterous. She would likely be incredible at gymnastics, if that were a thing, and would probably be a pretty good dancer if she applied herself. But. She doesn't like to dance.
  • If she's been drawing, or doing calligraphy, recently, it's pretty obvious. Her fingers, hands, and forearms will be covered in little splotches and streaks of ink and/or charcoal, but her clothing won't have a spot on it.
  • Zachariah still occasionally slips and calls her Elliebell, his nickname for her when she was younger.
  • Isabelle would be pretty happy in a poly-amorous relationship.

Relationships

dle6NJt.gifZiroh [Pet] Isabelle's pet eurasian lynx. She was a present from Isabelle's uncle, Kendrick, and his elven wife, Axilya. They brought the little princess Ziroh when she was about 6 years old after Isabelle became obsessed with a book detailing the adventures of a Catfolk woman named Ziroh. The lynx seems to have a slightly unnatural youthfulness about her, likely due to some elven influences or breeding. Most commonly, Ziroh can be found laying on Isabelle's feet if she has them propped up on an ottoman while reading, with her head flopped on the princess's lap. She also greatly enjoys going hunting with Isabelle when the opportunity presents itself, often times being given the lion's share of the game the princess hunts.
Zachariah Hightower [Father] An older gentleman by this point, Zachariah is the present ruling king of Dawncairn. It looks as though he'll be passing the reigns of the kingdom to Jeremiah soon however.
Katerina Hightower [Mother] Isabelle's mother. She's a little disappointed at this point that Isabelle hasn't been married yet, but is proud for the most part of her children. She will always stand beside and behind her family as needed. A very well-loved woman, though never particularly well known as a beauty.
Spencer Silvercrest [Older Brother] Isabelle's elder brother by 4 years, Spencer was claimed by Selûne shortly after Isabelle's birth in an attempt to position a power of her own somewhere close to Isabelle and the splinter of Shar resting within the girl. Spencer went on to become part of the Swords of the Lady (an order of Selûne) and renounced any claim he had to the throne previously despite being the eldest child. Jeremiah would make a better king anyways.
Jeremiah Hightower [Older Brother] Isabelle's elder brother by 2 years. Jeremiah is the "proper" son of the family. He has a head for politics, though far less so military. Fortunately, it seems like Dawncairn and the surrounding areas are in a time of peace that Jeremiah will likely be able to continue for some time. He thinks of Spencer, Grin, and Isabelle as a little strange, as they don't embrace royalty the same way he does, but he will definitely give Isabelle that she's quite knowledgeable. Married to the princess of another nearby kingdom, Seraphine.
Kristin Seyssel [Younger Sister] Isabelle's younger sister by 3 years, Kristin has already been married off at the age of 19 to Avenel Seyssel, a nobleman that controls some important lumber operations in the area of Dawncairn. A much... easier child than Isabelle.
Peregrine Hightower [Younger Brother] Grin is Isabelle's younger brother, 4 years her younger, and suits his nickname just fine. A bright and shining presence with quite a lot of charisma. While his parents would like him to just choose someone to marry out of the many that have been offered to him, Grin has been more than happy to keep living it up and playing at court and flirting with... well. Everyone.
