#han
home [noun]
a familiar or usual setting: a congenial environment.
in this life, han reluctantly moves into the city after being offered a position at a marine conservationalist group. in this life, it lives with its girlfriend, nancy, in a small apartment. although their new surroundings are still difficult to adjust to, in this life, they have new companions who help them.
"i see happiness in that view, in that memory."
at first glance, han appears to keep to himself a lot. it hardly ever sticks its nose in other people’s business, at least, not to their face. they’re passive and difficult to crack open; a distance is kept with vague words, despite being rather blunt at times. they’re not the most sociable, but they retain a level-head and a straight back. getting to know them more, a more caring side of han is realised. their language isn’t in words, but in actions; peeling fruits, cooking meals, keeping the door open.
and then, does one comes to understand: it’s been that way all along.
frogs, sandcastle building, warm foods, buckets, long walks
long summers, sunflowers, cold hands, sudden loud noises, swimming
- han's backstory doesn't really change all that much. meilin still dies, and the collector's club still disbands. the major difference is that han apologises to meilin's parents. for everything.
- although not part of his profession anymore, han still goes fishing pretty often.
- han initially lived alone in an even smaller apartment, before moving in with nancy.
- usually in the morning, han will braid its hair, but by the early afternoon, they're all undone. it can't do it like its nai nai...
- han tape binds specifically because it looks cooler to them. good luck trying to get them to admit this, though.
here is how to live your life.
watch a friend die without trying to help. have all the others leave you, one by one. be all alone, aside from the occasional letter from your parents. grow accustomed to this life—open up the shop, go out fishing, take a walk, clean up the store, close the shop, go to bed—and wake up to repeat it all over again. come to terms with your past. resolve to protect your hometown. don’t get the courage to apologise.
…until you do. snap the red strings. tell the parents everything. give and get closure. be forgiven and be asked to never see them again. nod your head. be offered a chance to move to a city. decline. be insisted to try. reluctantly accept. pack your bags. go on your first plane ride.
settle into a small apartment. take walks to explore the new area. bump into a pop star, a roboticist, and a former train conductor. bump into them a few more times. become friends with them. learn the pop star’s real name. never forget it. live with her. fall in love with her. kiss her back this time.
forget abandonment, and realise neither of you will be alone ever again.
"do you want to file taxes together?"
"is that your idea of a date, fishie?"
