mine beloved weirdmage
- Grew up in a small coastal town (their parents, both fishermen, get lost out at sea a couple years into Pellinore's life. Raised by the town as a whole, always hoping around different homes and never with Solid connections), begs a small band of travelling enchanters to take them on as an apprentice around age 15 during a period of absolutely hating their day-to-day, their surroundings, and their life as a whole. Taken on out of pity, studies with those enchanters for five years where absolutely nothing thrilling or extraordinary happens to them (that particular enchanting party under the banner of a well known and well established coalition of enchanters, their routes carved in stone and their work both consistent and never changing)
- Leaves the enchanting party after five years of study to move back to their hometown under the idea that they SURELY must've abandoned their true purpose there if they've felt so unfulfilled traveling around the Cradle and all. Still recognized by the town at large, falls right back into their ephemeral+shifting life as a forever guest. Manages four more years of that life before cycling back to the idea that they NEED to get out of there- their mistake was on sticking with People, not the travel itself. Takes off once more
- Ultimately settles uncomfortably into the life of a solo traveling enchanter. Works freelance and sets their travel plans more on convenience than regularity, a very bland life of nothing but small jobs they could do in their sleep and drinking whenever they can find a reason to justify it (drink when they're bored, drink when they've closed out a job, drink when they've had a rough day, etc etc. Refuses to acknowledge just how much of a presence alcohol has in their life)
- ^ Pellinore never accomplishes a thing of true significance in their life during this period. No grand discoveries, no lives saved, no books written. Does not advance beyond the household enchantments they learned under the band of enchanters due to complete apathy- why try? What they've got is enough to keep coin in their pockets if they stick to the more isolated towns (the coalition's travel routes the most significant thing Pellinore learned in their apprenticeship beyond the art of enchanting itself, never straying near where more official enchanters might peddle their services)
- A pit of anger hidden away in them that slowly bubbles up as Pellinore grew more apathetic towards all that life may offer. Only ever directed inwards, rare outbursts hidden away in locked rooms
- Attends the dragon-eater lord's festival on the pretense of breaking from that apathy just a bit- might as well visit a once in a lifetime event if there isn't any risk of Permanent harm. The more hidden away desire that they only acknowledge when drunk is What If They Win? What if they managed to outlive every slavering prospective, infinitely more talented and violent than they, and finally make something with their life? The singular victor in history, an accomplishment that would justify every single day wasted prior
- Barely versed in combat (having previously relied on safety in numbers when with the band, then stealth and defensive enchantments) renders their weeks competing in the festival a brutal, cyclical affair. Death and revival over and over without progress despite them TRULY putting forth effort towards a goal for the first time in a real long while, that toothless frustration what draws Big Pig to them after seeing them quite a bit in her own times around. Resistant to the mercenary's chatter at first, though their walls crumble quite quickly when they realize the sincerity in her interest (NOT a guy with friends. Always sitting on the sidelines staring at others asa they swivel between resentment and desire). The one to make the call to abandon the festival
- Unsettled at the thought of their new bestie Big Pig tailing them throughout their monotonous and dreary life, a big motivator to them proposing that THEY take up the hunting of dragons just as the dragon-eater lord had. The pair run this same scheme for their first few hunts: join up with a dragon hunting party, chip in just enough to avoid suspicion, then wait for the joy of picking over a fresh kill to distract enough for them to get a jump on the other hunters to kill them+keep the entirety of the dragon for themselves. Starts eating dragons from their very first kill, Pellinore especially delighted at the thought of it because of just how IMPORTANT that makes them
- ^ Similarly overjoyed at the progressive transformation said dragon-eating causes- their accomplishments and their very life purpose undeniably PRESENT in a way that they've never felt before. Constant transformation + adaptation + growth into a body beautiful and new alongside Big Pig, the complete contradiction to the apathy that had strangled all joy of life previously
- VERY very vain, spends far more time than is practical for the returns layering up defensive enchantments on their cute little outfit so they can still wear it even when hunting dragons. Major detriment to the hunting duo for a real long time as they struggle to pick up deadly magic, real reliant on self-bleeding rather than the more safe+detached forms of spell casting
- Incredibly stiff and closed off in almost all interactions, does not take much to realize how much they are gritting their teeth and clenching their hands in any conversation that stretches past two minutes. NOT built for customer service despite their travelling enchantment days having a whole lot of that in them. Prefers to listen rather than speak with Big Pig, initially out of an insecurity in thinking they may break her odd fixation on them if they say too much but slowly builds out to a genuine appreciation+desire to take in everything she says+does
- A whole lot of daydreaming over all the points their life could've changed and truly become Theirs before they find purpose in Big Pig, seething over the past rather than grabbing the reins of the present
- Not many hobbies since they fill most empty time with drinking and sleeping, occasionally carves lopsided wooden figurines and learned how to play the flute as a child
