Chesna hails from Kamchatka, Russia, where she spent her childhood inside a lab. She was unwillingly subjected to many cruel experiments - all in attempt to test the boundaries of the human mind and quantum physics. The young girl strengthened her telepathic abilities, and was considered the Soviet’s strongest and first successful human weapon of sorts. 

Ches was taken from her family at a very young age to be a test subject, which devastated her older brother Alexei. Because he worked for the Soviets, Alexei knew if he stepped in and tried to interfere there would be grave consequences.

The Soviet Union caught wind of the lab in Hawkins, so they sent Chesna to serve as a spy. She quickly discovered that she was in over her head, and broke off contact with the USSR after realizing the danger and true nature of the Upside Down. Ches somehow managed to destroy the tracking chip the Russians implanted into her spine, preventing them from knowing her location.
Chesna was cunning and agile, often stealing stuff from convenience stores and Melvald’s - where she had a run-in with Hopper. She managed to get away, but not without raising suspicions; The police chief ran his own investigation to figure out the origins of the troublesome newcomer. (?)

Chesna’s closest friend is Steve Harrington, whom she met while trying to break into a vending machine. At first they got off on the wrong foot - with Steve going as far as threatening to turn her in to the cops - but soon their bond grew and they became inseparable.

Shortly after the Starcourt Mall Fire, Murray took Chesna under his wing; He felt like he needed to take care of her given his bond with Alexei. She legally changed her last name and became a sort of adoptive daughter to him.
