- Guns actually exist on Kantei and Saru's monastery used them a lot, but Saru found muskets to be too slow in reloading and thus doesn't like them.
- He and his sister Tokichi are twins, but Tokichi was born first.
- Macaque societies are matrilinial, so Kantei is a matriarchy. Females are typically lords, generals, and politicians, while males become rank-and-file soldiers or, in samurai families, are sent off to monasteries to become monks.
Saru is very friendly and outgoing, but definitely makes a better warrior than a monk. Being surrounded by constant fighting made him totally desensitized to war and death, which sometimes shocks others. He is single-mindedly focused on becoming stronger and will fight anyone or anything, especially if it's to help the people he cares about.
On Kantei, a small island off the coast of Japan, scientists isolated a group of Japanese macaques that had been showing signs of intelligence. Fast forward to after the climate apocalypse, and the monkeys have evolved and formed a society similar to feudal Japan. A decades-long civil war currently grips the island, with many clans fighting for control. Monasteries serve as advocates for the people and have recently risen up in armed rebellion against the warlords. Saru was born into a samurai family and was sent to the monastery to study, where he learned how to channel his ki into powerful attacks. However, after his monastery joined the rebellion, it was burned to the ground by his sister, who had become a general for one of the island's most powerful warlords. Saru was banished from Kantei, and eventually made his way to the former United States. He now travels with a group of strange people, fighting and training to become stronger so he can eventually return to Kantei.
Saru had a very close relationship with Tokichi until he was sent to the monastery, and looked up to her a lot. Tokichi is much more calculated and cautious than Saru is, being better at strategy than actual fighting. She was heartbroken when she was told to attack his monastery, so instead of killing him she persuaded Nobuko to banish him. Saru does not resent her at all for this, and still thinks of her fondly even though he knows he'll have to confront her when he returns.
The liege lord of the province where Saru grew up, and Tokichi's boss. Nobuko is extremely militarily adept and is currently the closest anyone has ever come to uniting the whole of Kantei. As a result of this, a lot of people hate her, and her reputation for cruelty, while not entirely undeserved, is greatly exaggerated. Nobuko is an eccentric individual with a taste for art and flamboyant clothes, and is always thinking about the future. She can be very brutal in war, because she will do anything to achieve peace. Saru, however, can't see any of this depth to her character and thinks of her as a purely evil, domineering despot.
