Astarte is a Sciurivulpiky, a species of extremely rare and cute small animal that can be found in places like Shamar and the Rock Kingdom. Like the rest of her species, Astarte is a very peculiar rodentlike small animal whose morphology resembles that of both a fox and a squirrel. They are a rare case of small animal that not even Eggman could capture, as they make their dens in areas where heavy traces of magnetism prevent machinery from operating (as a main part of their diet is rare ores that are protected by their den's magnetism), and they do not typically find themselves leaving their dens. (A Sciurivulpiky den usually has their constantly available water supply) All Sciurivulpiky are the same height as baby Chao when they reach full maturity, and they are known to imprint on a single den for their entire lives. All Sciurivulpiky babies seek out their own dens to imprint on when they reach adolescence. Sciurivulpiky are also unlike other small animals, as they have never developed beyond their wild animal tendencies.
When Nefertari met Astarte, it was after Nefertari's talk with Laeticia during the aftermath of Team Gehenna's assault on the Rock Kingdom. The Sciurivulpiky was greatly injured, as Team Gehenna's assault caused her den to collapse. If it wasn't for Nefertari's quick thinking, Astarte would've died in the wilderness. After the cave in on Astarte's imprinted den was determined to be beyond salvaging, Nefertari adopted the Sciurivulpiky to take care of her upon realizing Astarte couldn't be returned to the wild.
Under Nefertari's care and protection, Astarte has become a lot healthier than she was when Nefertari first found the injured Sciurivulpiky; Astarte's required diet was immediately resumed by Nefertari's kinetic crystalization ability outside of combat, but the pet Sciurivulpiky has also taken a strong liking to a candy known as konpeitō as a secondary food source. Astarte can be a handful, however, due to her being a truly wild animal by nature compared to most small animal species; from Astarte's hyperactive energy akin to a fennec fox, to her occasional attempts to nibble on Nefertari's horn. These attempts at nibbling are not only caught by Nefertari everytime, but are currently being slowly and patiently trained out of Astarte since Sciurivulpiky are impossible to completely tame.
