Many years after Twilight Sparkle became an alicorn, Princess Luna was allowed to have her own pupil;but rather than picking a student attending any schools in Canterlot; Luna spent many nights walking the dream relm in search for one. That is when she found Lyra Starstrings, a gifted yet burnt out and self loathing unicorn. Princess Luna saw a lot of herself in the young unicorn and approached her, offering her to be her student. Lyra was reluctant, she didn’t believe she was worthy to learn from the princess.
