Appearance
Irukandji is a large, stocky hen with tusks that protrude out the sides of her face and curl upwards towards the end. The ivory is adorned with engravings detailing different symbols relating to her life and home. Iru's beak is dark, with white lines that bend from the top of her head down to the beginning of her maw, a paler blue stripe lined between them. White spots litter her beak's crest, the crest itself slightly curving forward. While her body is mainly coated in a black color, the tips of her tail feathers and her secondary coverts are an iridescent indigo color. Her throat is bare and holds the same indigo color, yet it doesn't hold the same reflective shimmer her feathers do. The back of Iru's head and neck are adorned with a tall feathered crest, white dots housed on the top of each.

BACKSTORY

Nestling-Fledgeling
Born on the coast, the little hen had hatched with the rising sun. A thick coat of white fuzz surrounded her body, with ears too big for her tiny head. She emerged from a clutch of two, her littermate never broke their shell. It was calmer in the time that followed, her parents had moved from Iru’s father’s family home in whale-port to a small town named Saltend Harbor. The town itself lay west of Crater lake, nestled on the river’s end that cut into the land. Saltend Harbor was home to many different walks of life, each individual carrying an intricate story just as complicated as the next, all intertwining to bring them to this overlooked settlement. Her parents, Reef and Andesine, were both fishermen at the port, often having to take turns caring for the young hen. When she grew to around 4 months old, they started teaching her the ropes on how to fish with a net, taking her out with them to their place of work.

After 6 months had passed, her puffy white fuzz had shed and in it's place were black feathers that had sprout from her skin. Irukandji was excited to start school, though a bit reluctant at the thought of being alone with all these unfamiliar people. Well, technically they were familiar, but she couldn’t pin a name to them. It was a small place after all, she’d have to have seen their faces at some point in the past. As the days went on, she was quick to make friends and did well in her classes, though, flying was a bit difficult to grasp with her stocky form…

Sub-adult
At around 1 year old, Iru single-child life was interrupted by the introduction of two new eggs to the household. Her mother and father had wanted more offspring, and since they had been able to settle into a steady rhythm since they’d arrived, they thought that this was an opportune time. Irukandji, thought highly against it. She was quick to grow jealous of these two oval shaped ingrates, huffing and puffing around the house, seeking her parent’s sole attention once more. To her annoyance, the two little calves had started to follow her around like lost puppies the second mother and father went back to work. Overtime, the pair started to grow on her as she taught the smaller roos things she had learned in school and stuff their parents taught her when she was younger. As time went on, she started to accept this position of role model for her little siblings, swelling with pride when they’d bound to her after she came back from school to ask her the millions of questions they’d come up with for that day.

Adult
Even in a small fishing village, news of the war and the fight for the fertile valleys was told by every messanger. Determined to help her fellow Dromaeus, Iru had inlisted to fight at 5 years old in this endless battle for territory. She dreaded the fact that she'd be so far away from her family, but knew that this was the best way to help ensure a brighter future for not only her kin, but her kingdom.

No book or messanger could tell you the extent of war, the souls it'd reap, the punishments it dealt. Irukandji was quick to learn why the battlefield was a dreaded place to be. To see a life so sacred being snuffed out in an instant, both Dromaeus and hippus alike. Even in these horrible times, misery does enjoy company. She was quick to bond with her fellow soldiers, it brought her comfort to know that there were other like her that'd despised the death that war brought with it. Irukandji would spend her days in battle shielding her smaller allies from oncoming attackers, her stocky build tanking the brunt of the damage and protruding tusks holding enemies at bay. Over the next four years, the hen had watched friends fall and just to be replaced with a younger individual the next day. The once chatty dromaeus was now riddled with sorrow for those who she didn't have time to grieve. Discharging after a nasty injury, she was taken home to the small fishing village she'd used to know. Now, all she can think was how she'd tell storys of this place to keep the pain off her friend's minds. How she promised to take them to see it one day...

Narwhal and Drift were very supportive at the time, letting her talk to them about her sorrows and taking her out to visit at sea shore. After a few months, they told her that Father's family had sent them a letter, offering job positions for all the siblings. It was something about keeping up the family legacy or something along those lines...but Iru had come to find that Drift had been writing to them for the past year or so. Taking up the proposition, Iru and her siblings had moved down to Whale port and staying with their father's family. To say it was a big change was an understatement, as the bustling city and dozens of new family members was a very big change to say the least. But overtime, Irukandji grew to like the constant activities of the people walking by, the loud voices of merchants advertising their wares and the sloshing of the waves hitting the ships at dock. For the first time in a while, she began to enjoy herself, being able to delve into her work and not have to focus on the pain and suffering that had happened and will continue to happen. It was the routine she needed to keep her head straight as she held onto the harpoon line to keep it from getting pulled under.

A few years back, an illness had suddenly struck the small port of Saltend. It wasn't long before Irukandji and siblings had gotten news of their mother's passing. Traveling back to Saltend harbor, she'd spent some time were her father, trying to convince him to come back to Whaleport with them. Their father was still weak from not only his battle with the illness, but the loss of his mate. She'd spent the next few months with her father before he'd agreed to come to Whaleport, leaving behind the now empty little shack by the river that they'd all once called home.

There was a massive storm that struck the coast, the ocean's waves crashing into the shore like whales into water. Waiting out the chaos, the hen was awoken to chatter about a missing ship. When she went to see what the talk was about, Iru was quick to realize that the docks were indeed missing a boat, and the family that belonged to it were nowhere to be found. The black dromaeus was quick to gather her siblings to set out in search of the lost vessel, and after a few hours of searching, they found a small red hen floating on what was likely remaining from the ship. Quickly taking the fledgeling aboard, she wrapped the poor thing in a blanket she'd brought incase of survivors. After another hour of wading through the ship's remains, Irukandji ordered her siblings to set a course back to shore. It wasn't too long until the little one awoke from her slumber, but Iru couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt as the fledgeling skittered back in fear. Letting out a small sigh, she knew it'd be a bit before the hen trusted her, and she'd wait. It did take some time before the fledgeling (sirocco, as she had been told) stopped hiding from her, and she was quick to showered the little one with soft fabrics and sparkling gems. Irukandji thinks she took to this whole "mothering" thing pretty well! Sure, it has it's ups and downs, but to see Sirocco happily bounding to her after school made it all worth it. At least she wasn't like the rest of her kin, often having to stop her other family members from "spoiling" Sirocco with seemingly endless treasures. It had seemed that the waters of Whaleport harbored more lost souls than just Sirocco. She and her brothers were out at sea, a good bit away from the shore. They weren't on one of the large ships, just a small boat to scope out any recent acivity when her brother Narwhal spotted something in the water. A shabby raft with a primate-like dromaeus laying ontop. At her brother's call, she wandered to the side of the boat before almost diving in herself at the sight of the poor roo. As they drifted the ship closer, Iru and Narwhal grabbed him and pulled him up onto the safety of the much larger boat. Persimmon was dehydrated and seemed to be fading in and out of conciousness as they sailed back to shore. She wasn't aware of how long he'd been out there, but if his condition had told her anything, it was that he'd been gone a while. The first thing was that he needed food and water, what happened didn't matter right now. Iru carried him inside the large building she called home and set up a small area so that she could monitor him if he'd gotten any worse. As time went on, she'd learned what he'd been through and the torment he'd suffered out at sea. Irukandji made sure Persimmon know that he could stay as long as he needed.
