As a child, they saw the struggles their family is going through. They wanted to help them in any way they can. If only they could speak to them in the right time.
Education is considered top priority, so they focused on their studies. Although bullied for being a nerd, they disregarded it, until it went out of hand. Perhaps homeschooling seems to be the best option.
They studied hard and hard, aim to achieve the highest grades. The best they could get is 98% (A), and that's about it. Striving for improvement, they ignored everything else but to study the resources the school had given to them.
They never spend any memorable moments with their family. All they did was to study.
There have been times social media was mentioned while researching and reading books. Fascinated with the concept, they decided to join the internet as a anonymous user. Numerous posts, information, entries, stories pop in their macbook. There are endless of it. It's overwhelming but they wanted to see more.
They are able to explore and discover hobbies they would be interested in. Find similar individuals to befriend and find comfort in.
Slowly, they become absorbed. Consuming content and contributing to communities. Abandoning their studies to join in a virtual world.
Everyday, they would use their macbook and iphone with no breaks. The screen buzzing with notifications and chatrooms flowing. Comfort characters and streamers stuck in their head and music playing wherever they go. Descending into the iceberg, they would find uncanny content circulating in their feed. They had atleast heard about 3-5 disturbing stories.
They snapped when they suddenly find their home unfamiliar. They had been in the internet for too long, they had forgotten where their place in reality is. They tend to dissociate themselves and experience absence seizures frequently. Madness took in as they try to escape their own delusions. The world doesn't feel like the world from before anymore.
Grades falling apart, going as low as 60% (F). They wanted to continue but they kept coming back to the screen. They never wanted to miss anything from the content they are interested in. They wanted to be updated with the latest trends. The goal they have been trying to reach was forgotten.
Soon, their virtual place had started to degrade as arguments and predators become more and more common. Safety doesn't seem to be present anymore and privacy felt like being intruded every moment. Slowly, they would fall in depression and overthink everything they had done. Have they posted something that is considered bad or could pinpoint their identity? Have they been a bad influence to someone? Have they unintenionally made someone feel bad for themselves or offended anyone? Is this ever the right decision?
Even with all of this, they can't stop coming back to the internet. Their family aren't typically around to help them. Infact, its much more harder to spot them in a brink of insanity because they often hide away from their guardians. Scrolling through endless feeds has became a habit. "Stop using the phone for a day", "Do other things rather than going to social media". These made it sound so easy, it discourages and upsets them. It's hard to break out of it.
Besides these, they had started eating less and less and taking care of themselves doesn't seem to be a priority anymore. They had been stuck thinking in their head. Stuck with their thoughts. Intrusive thoughts got louder and louder. They stopped talking to others, scared of possibly harming anyone.
Please note that I am not against these kind of posts mentioned above. I am neutral to those kind of content.
Their unusual behaviour remain unnoticed until a close friend of theirs found one of their posts that made them concerned. That friend checked them out and tried to help Barry. Barry — who wanted to find their way out of this madness — accepted their offer. A list of suggestions appear on the screen and they advised Barry to write it in a piece of paper instead of copy pasting it onto a digital notepad. Barry listened in hopes it might actually help in the situation they are in. They did what they were told yet they still returned to their macbook. It doesn't seem to be helping.
Despite this, their friend refused to give up. There must be a way, and there definitely is. Calling Barry might help. Perhaps invite another friend in their group sometimes if Barry feels comfortable with that option. The two work their way out of the hole they are trapped in. Reminding each other with self-care, self-love and tasks to make eachother feel better, to truly feel like they belong here. Adapting to a environment Barry once lived in, was weird but quite recovering.
Barry didn't get to check the feed since the voice call didn't let them. They don't really have the reason to check it anymore. Their friend on the other side would keep them updated.
This turned into a daily routine, and it worked. Barry got to focus on their studies again with their friend that coincidentally studies in the same grade as theirs. They were great study partners, perhaps best friends?
The two are so close with each other. Would be fun if they study in the same academy!
