Evalia

Evalia, or the Widow of Thorsmork Valley, as locals tend to call her, has never been seen by human eyes. To the animals of the valley, however, and its surrounding mountains, as well as other Esk, Evalia is a tall, lean creature. Her legs are very thin, and her stance is light-footed. She has a mane of long, silky fur, and her face is tapered with round eyes. She leaps among the meadow with soft brown hues, kissed on the face and tail with chalky blue-greens. Her spindly legs are a dark russet brown. On her head sits a bun of Lady's Mantle buds, and around the back of her shoulders, at the base of her neck, a row of the plant's wide, round leaves lay like a royal collar, catching the sun and the rain with equal joy.

How did Evalia become the Widow of Thorsmork Valley?

Evalia was born and raised in Iceland, under her two successful parents, always expected to succeed. She followed their path, and went to medical school, but during a particularly hard night of shadowing an ER doctor, she was traumatized after witnissing a young patient die of horrific wounds. Due to this, she took a week off of school, and spent that time exploring nature, trying to figure out what she wanted to do with her life.

Her future, however, found her on a hiking trail, in Thorsmork Valley, where she stopped to help a man with a nasty laceration on his arm. After that moment, the two became inseparable.

Within months, Evalia agreed to move back home with him, to America, where they quickly became married. Evalia began studying her true passion of childhood psychology, and her husband, Milo, joined the military to follow in his own family's footsteps.

For fifteen years, their lives were perfect. Evalia became an elementary school teacher, and Milo rose in the ranks of the army, where he became known as one of their most skilled chopper fliers. Everything was perfect, that is, until the war in Afghanistan demanded Milo's wing.

He was shot down from his helicopter while providing fire support from the air during a particularly deadly combat. For three days, they couldn't find where his parachute had landed, and when they did finally find him, he was gravely injured and hadn't long to live.

Evalia was able to make it to his side one day before he died, and for that she is and will be forever grateful. After his passing, however, she found herself unable to move on. She packed her bags, sold everything she owned, and flew back to Iceland.

Evalia was determined to fulfil Milo's dying wish, to spread his ashes where they had first met so long ago, so he may forever live on in that memory. She made her way to the Thorsmork Valley, and with heaving sobs, she sprinkled his ashes, handful by handful, over the greenery. It wasn't until that very moment that she knew she couldn't leave. She had nowhere to go, and her heart yearned to feel as close to Milo as she could. Without realizing it, she laid down in the grass, stared at the sky, and proceeded to weep.

The next thing she knew, her body had been transformed. She had been found by an Esk, a spirit of nature that took pity on her in her time of loss, and gifted her with the ability to live on in this place forever. Now, her wails are said to haunt the valley during the night as she mourns the loss of her former life. Her new life - or unlife, as this strange existence seemed to be - however, was one of immense beauty, and her heart soared with the knowledge that she would forever roam the one place that she was truly happy, with the lingering soul of the man that made her that way.

She is a very new esk, having been transformed in the year 2005.
