theme

devout dreamer • blossoming healer

A tournament jockey who's outgrown the Grove, but not yet grown into their role as a Lieutenant Commander of the Pact. When once Lorelei was privately disappointed in a Dream that failed to provide a Wyld Hunt, they now find the adventure they've embarked upon of their own accord is more than they bargained for.

That's not to say he regrets anything. As hard as it gets at times, Lorelei is determined to face everything on his plate with as much optimism as he can muster. He frequently feels out of his depth, and often wonders what things would be like if he had kept to his idyllic life in Caledon; but that just means that every time he overcomes an obstacle, it builds his confidence in himself and his assurance that he belongs where he is.

trivia

  • He once spent his free time helping rear fern hounds, and now has turned that talent to mounts. While he doesn't have an official beastmaster position within the Vigil, his comrades often come to him with questions and requests for assistance with difficult or ailing pets.
  • His enthusiasm for combat has been dimming as the stakes of his circumstances rise; when the only things on the line were bragging rights and a floral circlet, it was fun to be good at fighting, but he feels differently about being good at killing. This, along with his admiration for Commander Alan's protective magic, has been the driving motive behind his shift to a healer/support role.

At their core, Lorelei is truly, genuinely kind; the problem is that their relatively sheltered formative years have robbed them of some of the experience that may have helped them develop more tact and social delicacy. Successful tournament knights are popular and often showered in attention and favors, and they've rarely had to learn to lose gracefully or navigate criticism. All the best intentions in the world haven't stopped them from inadvertently breaking some hearts and unknowingly snubbing would-be friends -- at times they can be petty, immature, and inconsiderate, if only because their focus jumps around faster than their understanding of others' needs and feelings, and sometimes they try to anticipate those feelings sooner than asking about them. They have a short attention span and a narrow worldview, but they're growing every day.

If you can forgive that clumsiness, Lorelei is a wonderful friend to have. He practically douses his loved ones in support, enthusiasm, and affection, and takes pride in always being available to help in whatever ways he can. His warmth and energy are nearly bottomless, even in the worst of circumstances; and even if you get on his bad side, it's usually not so hard to get back on the good one.

PERSONAL STORY

Before the personal story, Lorelei lived a relaxed life. Though envious of those who'd gained dramatic blessings from the Dream -- valiants, fated lovers, naturally gifted sapling prodigies -- they'd found their own niche in the athletic pageantry of sylvari tournaments, and passed their days in prideful training, drowsy summer celebrations, and glittering little ecosystems of gossip.

As the Risen threat crept closer and closer to the Grove, though, Lorelei began to grow less comfortable in that easy lifestyle. That old envy of adventurous Valiants crept back, and when sylvari liasons to the three great Orders announced a special tournament -- the winners of which would be honored with an opportunity to retrieve the legendary Caladbolg -- he jumped at the chance.

He entered the tournament alongside his friend and rival, Merrit, and the two of them emerged from the trials with a joint victory. What Lorelei didn't know was that Merrit is, and always had been, a Nightmare Court spy -- who, in his attempts to gather petty information about Warden movements through the Grove and Astorea, had stumbled into a two-year-long friendship with them. He had his own motives for winning a chance to pursue the sword.

In the end, Merrit couldn't bring himself to steal Caladbolg, and confessed the true nature of their relationship; Lorelei, heartbroken, drove him away at arrowpoint and returned alone to the Grove. Seeking purpose and distraction in the aftermath of Merrit's betrayal, he plunged headfirst into the Vigil.

Surrounded by new friends and under the mentorship of Tactician Alan, Lorelei blossomed in the Vigil, though their wounded heart remained; quieted, by the flurry of urgent activity day to day, but never healed.

Merrit and Lorelei were reunited at the Battle of Claw Island, and an uneasy truce was born due to the unexpected friendship between Lorelei's mentor and Merrit's own; then the necessity of that truce was solidified by the formation of the Pact. Forced together through the campaign in Orr, Lorelei slowly learned to trust him again, and the two slowly built a new foundation. By the time Zhaitan was vanquished, their friendship had been reborn. It's possible nothing other than killing an elder dragon together could have managed it.

Merrit

[ FRIEND + LOVER ] Lorelei's friendship with Merrit was never simple -- even back in the now-distant days in Caledon, they always found him an enigma, one entangled in admiration and competition and attraction. Now, though, it's more tangled than it ever was. They've found their balance in it, though, and now they're more ready when they find themself surprised or uncertain as they get to know him all over again.

Alan

[ MENTOR ] A Vigil Tactician who took Lorelei under his wing when they were a fresh recruit. Lorelei admires him immensely, though that admiration doesn't always manifest as obedience or attentiveness. Still, they're eager to make him proud, and eagerly report their successes and plans to him -- even now, as they spread their wings and come into their own as a Lieutenant Commander.
