Michael was born to a Canadian civilian woman and an American combat medic, and thus his father wasn't home much. After the death of his mother, Michael was sent to the base his father was stationed at, where he was trained by his father and studied to be a doctor. He assisted with numerous surgeries and when he was old enough began providing medical services to civilians.

The event that Michael contributes to his recognition of being the Ultimate Surgeon is when he performed the first successful brain transplant on Sergeant Anderson, transplanting his brain into his own father's body. Michael dislikes talking about that surgery, as it ended with the death of his father. Sergeant Anderson then took on the roll of Michael's caretaker and received an honorable discharge. Around that time Michael received his letter from Hope's Peak informing him that should he move to Japan he would be selected for Class 75^th. Anderson agreed and enrolled Michael into a private school until his enrollment in Hope's Peak.

During his time at Hope's Peak Academy Michael bonded with all 15 of his fellow classmates, but was closest to Giovanni, Keiko, Nadiya, Dante and Amato. He was especially close to Giovanni, who he began dating a few months after they met; Keiko, who he considered one of his closest friends and Nadiya, who he bonded with over their similar history. After their graduation, they were offered enrollment at Hope's Peak University, an experimental college for Ultimates. Michael, along with his 15 other classmates accepted, and spent the remaining time leading up to The Tragedy there.

Once The Tragedy started, Class 75^th was evacuated by Rahul's father, as well as their families. The group was eventually contacted to become part of the Future Foundation. They accepted, returning to Japan and fighting against the Despairs and attempting to rescue Class 78^th. Shortly after, Makoto Naegi reached out to them to assist in helping the Remnants of Despair be rehabilitated, which Michael was a part of.

After the world began returning to normal, both branches of Hope's Peak were reopened, and Michael along with Class 75^th returned to classes.

-Lister is an occupational name for a textile dyer
-Michael's last name comes from surgeon Joseph Lister, known as the father of modern surgery for sterilizing surgical equipment and wounds
-Michael's mother was Jewish, therefore he is, and was a practicing Jew until leaving with his father
-He still has his mother's mezuzah
-Michael suffers from being underweight, as he often forgets to eat, and takes several vitamins to stay healthy
-Michael is a germaphobe, and wears a surgical mask at all times he's awake
-To avoid scaring kids he had to treat, Michael would wear decorated masks depicting Hello Kitty or funny faces
-Michael has unusually sharp teeth
-It took him two years to work up the courage to kiss Giovanni on the mouth, and ended up biting Giovanni's tongue
-While he has a complicated relationship with Sergeant Anderson, he would be genuinely heartbroken if he died, as he is now all he has left
-Michael is terrible at the game Surgeon Simulator
