Curious • Empathetic • Reckless

A young woman leading an unremarkable life, until she's drawn into the devil hunting world by a chance encounter.

At first glance, one might consider Tilda to be quiet and reserved, but this is only a defense after a lifetime of bad relationships, both romantic and platonic. Timid at first, she isn't inclined to seek out close relationships, but of course, they end up happening despite her intentions. Despite these struggles, she wants to support those close to her in any way she can, and if someone breaks through her walls and genuinely cares for her, she's in their corner for life. So long as someone puts forth their best effort, she's willing to forgive a lot.

To those close to her, she's sometimes high-strung and hot-headed, but deep down is a vulnerable soul seeking love and a place to belong.

After her near-death experience, she devoted herself to learning all she could about the Underworld and has amassed an impressive amount of knowledge. Also a skilled illustrator, her current project is a compendium of what she's learned. Curious and booksmart, she picks up on details others might overlook, but often doesn't think before acting, particularly if someone else is in danger.

Though she isn't a fighter herself, her skills in demonology and alchemy give her a few tricks she can use to help from the sidelines.

"It's not that I don't care -- but it doesn't change how I feel."

Early Life

Born in Red Grave City to a perfectly normal family, Tilda spent her youth blissfully ignorant of the Underworld and its dangers until an incident when she was nineteen years old.

While away from home after dark, she was attacked by a group of demons seeking human blood. Just as they were about to strike, a man in a tattered blue coat came to her rescue -- though it seemed to be unintentional. With only a brief glance in her direction, he left without a word.

Her near-death experience sparked a fascination with demons and the Underworld that would become her focus. She spent the following years collecting more occult writings.

As time went on, she found herself stalling and frustrated with her studies. Much of what she had found was incomplete, inaccurate, or just altogether fabricated.

She had long since given up on ever seeing her hero again, but the image of those cold blue eyes never left her.

Before the Nightmare

She has a lucky break when, on a day trip to a nearby city, she meets an up-and-coming Artisan of Arms in a shop full of fake occult eccentricities. Nico tells her of her plans to go to Fortuna and agrees to let Tilda come.

Together, they track down Nero. The three of them (and Kyrie) become fast friends, bantering and bickering like they've known each other their whole lives. With the Order's records and Agnus's firsthand knowledge, Tilda's expertise grows exponentially. She begins dabbling in alchemy.

When Nero returns from his first clash with Urizen and tells them what had happened in Red Grave, her hometown, she knows she can’t sit and wait. She has to do something, anything, to help. She leaves under cover of night but is caught at the door by Nico.

The Qliphoth Incident

After a firm warning from Nico -- "Don't die, or I'll kick your ass" -- Tilda returns to Red Grave. She does her best to aid the few remaining survivors fleeing the city, but as she helps a family escape, they're surrounded by demons. Her wards keep them at a safe distance, but they're trapped.

V and his familiars arrive. When the last demon falls, and he turns his eyes to her, she's struck by an odd sense of deja vu -- but she quickly brushes it off.

She stays at V's side for the next month as the two do everything they can to slow the expansion of Urizen's influence. During that time, they grow closer, against both parties' supposed better judgment. V's familiars also form a bond with her.

After seeing Dante, and learning that his brother is his identical twin, she accepts that Vergil is the one who saved her life all those years ago. At the same time, she learns that V himself is Vergil's cast off humanity.

In the Qliphoth, as V readies to face Urizen for the final time, he offers his necklace to her as a memento -- and a promise that he will return to her.

Aftermath

Six months later, after returning from the Underworld, V, now reborn as Vergil, makes good on his promise. The adjustment is awkward, with both Tilda and Vergil having had time to overthink and assume the worst. She mostly avoids him for a few days after his return, but Vergil forces a confrontation. Once they talk things through, they agree to take it slow as they settle into their new dynamic.

Sometime after that, she moves in with him at Dante's office and takes up the unenviable role of secretary, though she occassionally accompanies them on the less dangerous jobs. As Vergil grows more irritable at their lack of privacy with Dante and his friends constantly around, he sets to rebuilding his old family home with Dante and Nero's help. Once it's complete, he and Tilda return to their home city of Red Grave and open their own branch of Devil May Cry specializing in magical artifacts and mysteries.

Nico's Report: Tilda

I picked this gal up in a bunk occult shop a few days before shipping out to Fortuna to find Nero. Can't really say what made me agree when she asked to tag along. Guess it was that sparkle in her eye when she got talking about digging deeper into her field of choice.

Anyway, glad I did. She's a real help in the workshop. Sure, I coulda deciphered my daddy's research myself, but there's no replacement for a real expert. And don't let her wilting violet act fool you: she knows her stuff. We're lucky her interest is purely academic, or we'd have another Agnus on our hands.

Way she tells it, she first discovered the existence of demons when a gang of them jumped her a few years back. Lucky for her, some mysterious stranger showed up outta thin air to cut them down before disappearing into the night. Ever since then, she's devoured every piece of demon lore she could get her hands on.

Guess that explains why she gravitated to V like she did. All the demonic mysteries on that guy, she must feel like a kid in a candy shop.

Nico's Report: Artemis Bangle

A nifty little trinket Til made out of the fragment left behind from Nero's fight against Artemis. I couldn't stand to look at the damn thing, knowing it was the smashed-up remains of a Machiavellian masterpiece, so I let her have it.

She harnessed its ability to create light constructs for a less destructive purpose. Instead of firing searing arrows, the bracelet lets her summon a trio of familiar critters to help her out.

(Though, now that I think about it -- I wonder if she can use this thing to power up her gunshots like Nero does? I gotta remember to ask her to test that out with me.)

Nico's Report: Mirage Familiars

Light constructs created by the Artemis Bangle. The mirages (I guess metaphysical infernal phantasm doesn’t really apply here) of Griffon, Shadow, and Nightmare are linked to Til through the bracelet, letting her see through their eyes. It makes them useful scouts, and a couple sets of extra hands -- or, uh, talons and paws -- but that's about all they can do.

Griffon and Shadow retain a simplified form of their original appearances, but Nightmare is a little more manageable now. Might even say he's downright cute.

They're only shades of the originals, but I like to think they'd be glad they're still looking out for her. (And between you and me, I'm glad this little chicken ain't squawking all the damn time.)

Nico's Report: Sister of Mercy

A gift Nero and I put together to celebrate the grand opening of Devil May Cry, Red Grave. Til’s hardly a gunslinger, so we made sure to build it lightweight, compact, and low recoil. Holds ten rounds of custom-made silver bullets; not nearly enough to take down the kinda thing the devil hunters face off with on the regular, but good enough in a pinch.

Sure, she’s got her scary-protective beau slicing up anything that looks at her funny, but if she’s gonna be out in the field, she needs something to defend herself. We ain’t letting our girl run off empty-handed.

Naturally, I put together the inner workings, while Nero did the detailing on the frame.

VERGIL

[ lover ] Despite swearing she would never get involved with anyone again, and V's own hesitance to open himself up to someone else, the two found themselves developing feelings for each other over the month they spent together in Red Grave. They got along easily, V indulging Tilda's fascinations and engaging with her rambling about her interests, and her showing him a warmth and care that he was quite unused to, but quickly found himself becoming reliant on. This continues even when Vergil returns.

Alongside Dante and Nero, Tilda is one of the people who reminded Vergil of the worth of his humanity and the power it holds.

While the details are (very, very) different, each of them relates to the other's emotional trauma. Both have spent their lives purposefully isolating themselves, convinced they can't trust or rely on others. Tilda provides Vergil a calm and unjudging refuge, while he is a shielding presence, taking charge when she can't bring herself to.

He's quite soft with her, and viciously protective. Once they get past the awkward phase right after he comes back from the Underworld, they're absolutely smitten with each other, both in their own way.

Nero

[ best friend/sort-of son ] When Nico and Tilda first come to Fortuna, Nero is wary of both of them, but especially mistrusting of Tilda. Her thirst for demonic knowledge reminds him too much of Agnus, but after spending months together, he softens on her, and the two becomes close friends. He teases her, but only ever out of fondness, and in return, she and Nico team up to annoy him.

He isn't thrilled that she ends up with his father -- in fact, he finds it weird, but tries his best to keep that to himself. As strange as their whole arrangement is, if the ones he loves are happy, he's not going to stand in the way of that.

Tilda sees Nero like a little brother, though once she gets involved with Vergil those feelings start becoming more maternal. Nero, again, finds it weird as hell, but can't deny that it's nice to experience the motherly love he never had.

Nico

[ best friend ] If someone only saw the two of them trading curses and colorful insults, they might assume Tilda and Nico absolutely loathe each other, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Despite only knowing each other for a few months, they're nearly inseparable.

Even though she's a few years younger, Nico feels protective of Tilda and does her best to watch out for her. Tilda is impressed by (and a little envious of) Nico’s self-confidence and ability to stand on her own two feet. (And they do each other’s nails <3)

Kyrie

[ friend ] Kyrie is the only person Tilda feels like is on her level: a perfectly average human, no powers, no gunsmithing genius, no demon-slaying expertise. They bond over simple hobbies like cooking and sewing and singing. Kyrie can tell Tilda carries pain with her, and reaches out with kindness to show her she isn't alone anymore. Kyrie’s pure, unconditional love for humanity seems almost unreal to Tilda, and she would do anything to protect her.

V's Familiars

[ friends (pets?) ] Tilda and Griffon end up at each other's throats more often than not, but there’s a fondness in their back-and-forth. Shadow is calm and relaxed around her, allowing her to lean against him to sleep, even letting her pet him like a dog. Both of them will leap in to protect her if need be.

As for Nightmare… He doesn’t have much of a mind of his own, but he seems to regard her as an ally, if nothing else.

Dante

[ friend ] Tilda knows Dante as the Legendary Devil Hunter, having read about him in her research. When they meet in Red Grave, she gets a bit starstruck. Their interactions during the Qliphoth Incident are limited, so they only start getting to know each other once she and Vergil are together, his easy-going personality letting them bond easily. He's glad to see his brother lightening up and teases him for being wrapped around her little finger.

Lady and Trish

[ acquaintances ] She's not as close with these two, but they're friendly enough. Tilda thinks they're very cool and gets starry-eyed on the rare occasions she gets to watch them fight. (Vergil gets jealous, but he won't admit it.)
