maryam wicker

Maryam Wicker is a Pokémon trainer from the UNOVA region as of 2008. Prior to this, she lived in KALOS, KANTO and JOHTO, however was far too young to embark on a trainer's journey. She has 8 gym badges and has defeated the Elite Four, and is currently travelling to complete her National Dex, as well as building her team's strength to eventually become a candidate for a member of the Elite Four.

maryam is somewhat lean, standing at 5'9". most of her height comes from her legs, which are on the longer side - she finds great difficulty in finding jeans that fit to her liking, so she usually just gives up and wears army boots that hide the fact that her jeans are just past her ankle, and look ridiculous on their own. she typically likes to wear flannels and jumpers - her favourite combination being a purple jumper and a blackwatch flannel. her hair goes just below her tailbone, kept in a loose braid the majority of the time.

maryam can be very naive, despite getting over her habits of overthinking and mentally exhausting herself that she had quite severely when she first started training pokemon. her downfall is her inability to think clearly when it is most needed, giving her a "mind block" which makes it much more difficult to focus and use strategies which she relies on for more challenging battles.

- will go on an adventure for months at most without coming home, and then hibernate in her bedroom for like a week straight before even leaving the house
- her hair colour and length is vaguely similar to N's, so naturally she gets in trouble with team plasma quite often. she just ends up kicking their asses in battle anyway but it becomes a mild inconvenience when she leaves the house to buy coffee or something and she gets held at gunpoint by a bunch of angry ginger people in white uniforms, you would think that they'd realise by now, but they're team plasma, when the fuck have they ever actually been smart ever in the slightest

- now she just likes to piss them off in any way she can like battling ONE of the members just to hold the other ones up and make them have to wait and not run away lol
- she's beaten the elite 4 in unova and johto (she was too young to be anywhere near strong enough when she lived in kalos and kanto), grimsley has bumped into her before at route 4 and they battled and then took a selfie together
(basically, maryam takes the role of the "trainer" in the game storyline of pokemon BW, since both touko and touya don't follow that route in the manga. i thought it'd be nice to have an OC that interacts with the other trainers like the protagonist does in the game, since it's quite an open canvas. touya is still the hero of ideals ofc, maryam doesn't get involved with the dragon shit, as cool as the dragon shit is)

• As much as Maryam loves her pokemon adventure, there is one thing she absolutely cannot stand: Tall. Fucking. Grass. Forget having her ankles being nibbled by bug pokemon, ever since she became a good trainer wild pokemon began leaving her alone... it's just it really itches and it gets in her pants and everywhere else, too. She suspects she has more than a few allergies. Plus, she always has the worst luck in thick foliage, always coming out covered in brambles and thorns... If it were up to her she'd always stick to open paths but unfortunately, pokemon don't go out in the open. (credit varkarrus)

• the only type of shoe that she owns is boots - she's so used to the platformed sole that they have, making it uncomfortable to walk in trainers/sneakers from not having worn them in so long
• maryam suffers from severe seasonal affective disorder, or 'seasonal depression'. a deficit of sunlight in the winter months has an impact on serotonin production as well as increasing melatonin in the blood, resulting in lethargy, low mood, anhedonia and a very negative perception of oneself. This does not affect her in the spring or summer months, however the onset begins in late autumn, where she begins to feel a little more drained than usual. she has multiple options for treatments; light therapy (literally, sitting in front of a UV light, which she would much prefer not to), medication, or taking a vacation to a region in its spring or summer seasons. if she doesn't receive treatment, she has a high chance of spiralling into a depressive episode, where it's near impossible to get her out of bed. she pretty much becomes a vegetable in this state
