The Beginning

Factor Eight

FACET-2I4D, CUT-7XE

Golden Rutilated Quartz, aka: Rue, is Team Galaxy's Head Medic who honestly seems like he wants to be anywhere but helping his fellow gems. He's rude, sarcastic, and impatient when it comes to dealing with others. Currently only a small handful of gems has seen his truely good side, but if he wasn't good at all he wouldn't have agreed to become part of the team in the first place. Rue just doesn't take shit from anyone and he's simply tired of dealing with all the whiney brats on the ship and on Gem Island.

Golden Rutilated Quartz isn't your typical medical officer. He's a cranky old reclusive gem, more invested in his work and research than he is with socializing and making friends. Rue doesn't like to get out much, finding the confines of his office and medical bay more appealing to him than going out on missions or adventures. But that doesn't mean he doesn't like discovering new things! Often times, between being hounded to heal the other members of Team Galaxy, he is busy studying organic life and researching various healing methods to aid him in his cause. Most often he is working with plants in hopes to improve the ecosystems of dying planets.

If you're on his good side he's a marginally pleasant gem to be around. However he's generally quiet most of the time and doesn't actively go out of his way to talk to others because he likes to be left alone. Though he performs exceptionally well at his job, he's very finicky with his patients. Rue will sometimes refuse to assist a gem for minor wounds/injuries, leaving that a task for his assistants to take care of instead. He isn't lazy- he just doesn't tolerate his time being wasted on trivial things. Rue is often blunt, condescending, or rude in his way of speaking which makes him difficult to talk to. Rue also has a habit of losing his temper fairly easily, especially when his workload is high.

Though sometimes he acts like he doesn't care about his team mates if they're ever in true, immediate danger he will do everything in his power to assist them. He cares, deep down, he just doesn't feel the need to show it.

Fifty five thousand years ago Golden Rutliated Quartz popped out of the ground on some backwater Homeworld controlled planet. He, and several others of his type, were created to be more Quartz soldiers for any upcoming battles or take overs that Homeworld may have needed for them. But he was not like his fellow siblings. Rue, as he came to be known as, wasn't strong like his brothers and sisters. He couldn't form a weapon from his gem like his brothers and sisters. He wasn't even durable like his brothers and sisters and could be poofed a lot easier than them. The best he could do was flash lights from his gem and that wasn't useful for a soldier at all! It took them around a thousand years of trial and error, trying to figure out what was wrong with Rue before they discovered his true potential.

The "light" abilities he'd shown from the start, they realized, had completely opposite effects of what his creation purpose was. Though generally this would have made him be looked at as defective and he'd be broken but his superiors decided that his newfound abilities could be put to good use. Instead of being able to punch and break the enemy-- this Golden Rutilated Quartz could mend the wounds and and heal the damages done to his fellow quartz soldiers!

Rue suddenly started getting a lot of attention and quickly became known as the Quartz with healing abilities and would often be ordered to heal every injured gem they sent his way. He was taken away from his brothers and sisters, forced to become a traveling medic for the Yellow Diamond Court, where he was assigned and passed around to take care of the wounded for various means. After seeing and dealing with so many damaged gems and souls due to Homeworld's greedy needs, not to mention watching planet after planet die as well, all while being poked and prodded all the time because of how unique and rare he was, Rue had slowly grown to completely and utterly despise Homeworld.

Finally, nineteen thousand years ago, Golden Rutilated Quartz decided he'd had enough of Homeworld. He couldn't handle watching them kill another planet. He couldn't handle being bossed around and told what to do anymore. He couldn't handle being used and abused for one more day after thirty five thousand years of putting up with Homeworld's bullshit. So, he escaped between missions and joined the Underground rebel society. He planned to lay low and avoid being noticed. He wanted to work at his own pace and take plenty of time to himself and only help when he wanted to. It was nice, quiet, peaceful, and he definitely enjoyed being away from Homeworld rule.

While working as a secret Underground medic, Rue had met a wide variety of gems and organic beings. The most interesting gems, for him, were the multi-gem fusions. On Homeworld they were considered taboo or disgusting, and yet he'd met many who were very beautiful. One that stood out to him the most was one he'd met around nine thousand years ago. She was a fusion of three gems with entirely different personalities who, as a whole, made a somewhat unstable fusion. Fordite had become gravely wounded in a fight, one of her gems had been cracked pretty bad, though rather than unfusing she insisted on holding her form together. When Rue met her he asked her why she wouldn't unfuse and she told him that her components needed each other and it was better to stay together than apart. Honestly, he thought she was nuts but he offered to help her and heal her gem good as new.

For a long while afterwards, the encounter with Fordite left him thinking. Though he'd been helping gems that needed him for a long time. First under orders then afterwards as a free gem he'd still gone here and there, he never had anyone he felt any sort of bond with another gem before. He was just doing what he was accidentally formed to do. But there soon came a sense of longing for a group or family to belong in that formed inside him. One that he then began trying to fill in hopes to find others of his kind that he could get along with.

Unfortunately, time and time again people only wanted to use him for his healing abilities, not really wanting anything to do with him personally, and he slowly accepted that it was just how it was. That is, until around five thousand five hundred years ago when he encountered Fordite once more. Ironically yes, she came searching for him specifically for his healing powers as well, but she also offered him a place on her space ship and to be a part of her small crew of rebels. He was reluctant at first, thinking that she was just trying to use him like everyone else, but after some encouraging, with the promises of exploring and discovering new life and giving him another purpose, he eventually caved and joined Team Galaxy.

Abilities
  • Rue is fairly skilled at making a sarcastic joke at literally anyone's expense, even his own captain, and about pretty much anything.
  • He keeps it a secret but Rue has a fairly green thumb. He learned how to care for and maintain plants since working alongside two plant lovers.
  • Able to produce small bubbles filled with liquid light from his gem that can repair any gem's physical forms. This can either heal wounds entirely or encourage faster repair, depending on how much juice he's putting into the bubbles.
  • Able to heal cracked gems when his gem is applied directly to another gem's gem.
  • Able to store his liquid light energy into vial for use on the go. Healing is not instantaneous this way. The older the vial, the more time it takes for the healing to take effect. When heated with Opal's healing fire the False Tears also have a numbing property to null any pain on both physical forms and gemstones themselves.
  • Able to make his gem or physical form glow brightly in a flash of light to blind, distract, or otherwise hinder enemies to be able to escape.
Limitations
  • Rue doesn't really like being in the dark, like not at all. He usually always has to have some kind of light in whatever room he's in and he generally doesn't go out at night.
  • Rue has a difficult time relating with others or even caring to relate. He isn't selfish he just lacks empathy.
  • Abilities are very draining, especially when healing cracked gems as that takes more focus and energy.
  • The liquid in the False Tears vials don't last longer than three months. Once the vial has been opened it expires or "dries up" within a week. They do not heal cracked gems.
  • Not able to project light for long periods and generally used as a last resort.

TRIVIA

  • Rue smells like coffee and tastes like lightly toasted marshmallows.
  • Rue drinks, on average, about three pots of coffee every day. It's the ONLY thing he will drink unless Opal switches his coffee with tea and he doesn't realize it right away.
  • He regularly likes to add an assortment of Alcohol to his coffee. This may be whiskey, kahlĂșa, vodka, rum, bourbon, etc.
  • Rue actually gets a kick out of it when other gems are nervous around him. He was pretty much walked all over on Homeworld so intimidating others is kind of a joy for him.

Artist Notes

  • His gemstone on his hand if extremely important to his design and must always be included.
  • If drawn with another character please draw his 6'2" height accurately!
