Kaede Akiyama

AINCRAD ARC

Kaede was born and raised in the inner parts of Tokyo. She always loved city life, and always loved being able to find out about new video games quickly. While her parents weren’t always very supportive of her nearly obsessive hobby of video games, they still would buy her new ones every once in a while. Once she heard about the newest breakthrough in gaming technology, a full-dive virtual reality system called the NerveGear, she knew she had to have it. With enough convincing of her parents and saving money, she was able to preorder both the system and the MMO game to go along with it, Sword Art Online. She wasn’t able to get the early access like the beta testers but she was able to get her hands on a copy on release day, and she was ecstatic. Though that didn’t last long when she and the other 10,000 people learned they could not exit the game, and could possibly die. She was scared for her life, and due to this she remained not very skilled at the game for the whole of her being there. She stayed on the lower floors and tried to get small jobs as a solo player to make a decent living. She met Asuna during one of her jobs and that’s how she was introduced to Kirito and his friends. When she met Klein, she ended up developing a small crush on him, but it never went anywhere once they became close friends. When the game was cleared and after her extensive rehabilitation, she found her friends from SAO to keep in contact with them.

FAIRY DANCE ARC

Kaede wanted to get back into video games, despite all she went through in SAO, and after getting game recommendations from Agil, she decided on playing a new one called Alfheim Online. Her parents were wary of letting her play, but she was able to convince them that it would be good therapy for her, so in the end they allowed it. Since she got into the game earlier than her friends, she stayed solo playing it until Kirito shut down the server.

PHANTOM BULLET ARC

She considered creating a new avatar for the rebooted world of ALO, however she was becoming an adult and wanted to start focusing on making money for college. Because of her absence, she wasn’t very good at holding jobs, so she went back to VRMMOs to help her. She found out about Gun Gale Online, it was the only pro VR game that had a real world currency exchange. While she wasn’t the best at video games in the past, she felt confident she would be able to start making money from this game. It took her a while to get used to the setting change, but she embraced it and learned about guns. In the real world, since she wasn’t in school and didn’t have a real job, she would often walk around the city, either just to walk or to do chores for her parents. One day while she was walking she passed an alley where she saw a girl being bullied, so Kaede stepped in to help the girl. Thankfully, after threatening to call the police on the bullies, she was able to chase them away. She exchanged contact information with the girl, who she learned was named Asada, and promised her that she would be there to help her new friend if she was ever in trouble. Kaede told Asada that she would often walk in that area at that same time because she did chores for her family, so if Asada texted her she’d probably be close by. Asada thanked her, and they parted. Later on, Kaede was playing GGO when she met with a girl with the screen name Sinon. Sinon recognized Kaede and the two immediately chatted about video games and their lives. They decided to try and work together to help achieve their goals. The two became comfortable with each other, and eventually began dating. Kaede would often stay at Asada’s home to help comfort her when she had panic attacks.
