02 — Personality

From an outside perspective, Marivaux seems to be a socially awkward person, not having much to say other than stating the obvious. To her coworkers, she's known as the main target of Euphrasie's anger as she often sleeps on her job and frequently slacks off, only publishing articles once in a blue moon. However, her articles are highly controversial, specializing in exposing high-profile figures of the skeletons in their closet. She's aware that she has potentially made enemies along the way, so she tries to keep her loved ones far away from her risky line of work.

Marivaux's blank face is a result of her struggle to express emotions naturally and has to force her facial muscles to move to whatever is appropriate at the moment. Under the careful training of the previous Knave, Marivaux has grown to use this to her advantage and has proved herself to be great at convincing others about how she truly feels. She hides behind false absent-mindedness and weaponizes incompetence. She can do many things perfectly and isn't afraid to get her hands dirty, but if needed, she has no problem putting on an act so that other people do the work for her. She doesn't put in the extra effort to mask her expressions most of the time because she thinks the biggest lies are veiled in truth. (And also because that's just tiring.)

03 — History

About

A senior journalist from the Steambird. Marivaux works closely with the Marechaussee Phantom to report crime cases and criminal case trials. As she specialize in investigative journalism, the Fortress of Meropide became the place she most often frequented. Of course, becoming involved with the underground will most certainly stain your hands with dirty work as well. This, she knows very well.

Background

The wife of Monsieur Dorante is a curious woman with the heart of an adventurer. It was no surprise when she overheard a group of adventurers claiming to have spotted a Dahu, a goat-like creature with uneven legs near the Belleau region, her interest was piqued. It was an obvious bait for young adventurers to get themselves in a goose chase, but she decided to investigate anyway. She told Dorante that she needed some time alone to clear her mind and set off for the mountain. There she met a man, whom she had an affair with during her search. He had claimed to be local, but the morning after the night they lay together, the man had ominously disappeared. Unsurprisingly, she came home empty-handed.

Months passed, and she found herself pregnant. She returned to her husband, intending to pass the child as Dorante's. But when the time came, there was something undeniably different about her baby. Besides the albinism, the child's legs were noticeably uneven, and the obvious fuzzy ears growing on both sides of the child's head. She knew she could never hide the truth from her husband. The child's non-human traits were too glaring to be explained away. Shame and guilt weigh heavily upon her. In desperation, she pleaded with the midwives, that she could not possibly bear the shame of this child. She begged them to take her baby away and implored them to lie, to tell everyone that her baby had not survived childbirth.

One of the midwives had brought the child to the "House" under the directorship of the previous Knave. She was gifted a pair of crutches as she grew, though she prefers her wheelchair most of the time. For years, the child remained unnamed, she was simply referred to by the nicknames given by the other children. She eventually came across a poetry book where she took the name 'Mariamne' from. (The other children think that the name doesn't fit her face at all, but all of those comments fall on deaf ears.)

Mariamne had always been less lively than her peers. She's often described as an absent-minded child who often stares blankly into the distance. In truth, Mariamne feels and thinks as much as the other children, but has trouble expressing emotions naturally to the point she has to make a conscious effort to move her facial muscles to whatever is appropriate at the moment. Occasionally, she expresses inappropriate emotions at the wrong times. Because of this and her appearance, she can appear rather unsettling to others. However, this catches the attention of the Knave, who sees it as a potential. Personally training Mariamne to put that 'ability' of hers to good use.

Under the attention of the Knave, Mariamne proved to be a great actor. She was eventually given the mission of infiltrating Monsieur Dorante's Opera Troupe.

04 — Trivia

  • Marivaux is taken from Pierre Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux, a French playwright, novelist and journalist.

  • Mariamne is taken from the 1724 Hérode et Mariamne, a play by the French writer Voltaire, based on the real Hasmonean princess Mariamne I.

  • Belcourt is a surname that consist of Old French belle 'beautiful' + co(u)rt 'court residence'.

  • Her title is a reference to one of Marivaux's essays titled "Le Spectateur français", which translates to "The French Spectator".

  • Her constellation, "Nubes Ovium" translates to "Sheep Cloud".

  • Marivaux is half human, half Dahu, a legendary creature that resembles a mountain goat and is well known in France and francophone regions. Her pupils are horizontal.

  • Marivaux has albinism, hence why her eyelashes and eyebrows lack colors.

  • Marivaux's MBTI is INTJ-A.

  • Her previous name was Maribel. After Fontaine reveal I've decided to rework her completely to make her fit in with the other Fontaine cast. Her nickname is still Maribel from Mariamne and Belcourt just because I got too attached to that name HAHA.
