Francis is 23 and from a upper middle class family in Pennsylvania.

Francis was 12 when his family went to a faire for a family outing. He spotted a stage magician doing simple card tricks and vanishing acts.

He became fascinated and began neglecting his studies for what his parents called "stupid card tricks". He was to graduate law school and join his father's firm as an attorney.

Instead he would take time he was supposed to be studying to practice tricks.

He got caught practicing by Arnold which spooked him, causing the flash paper to burn his hands badly (eventually scarring them).

Francis became depressed after his parents harshly scolded him while he was healing from his injury.

When he was 22 and was midway through Law School, he packed up his bags and left the east coast. Leaving behind a letter that stated "He was sorry. But I'd rather make smiles in a crowd than enemies in a courtroom."

He took some money and once he got out of the city he bought a horse, a wagon, and some supplies for his burgeoning stage career of "The Fascinating Francis".
