Brody and Sadie met in high school; Brody was a senior on his way to graduating, while Sadie was a freshman. They didn't notice each other's existence until one day when Brody was skipping class as he usually did, sneaking into the library to hang low until the final bell rang. He happened across a beautiful, young girl in the back of the library, settled on the floor with her eyes closed, fingers of one hand delicately stroking the pages of a book in her lap. He was struck by how serene she looked, confused what she was doing but too enamored to speak.
"Your heart is racing."
Those were the first words Sadie had spoken to him, pulling him out of his awed state and flustering him. After that, they began talking, which became a near-daily occurrence. He quickly learned of her blindness, and her humor--she in fact did not have superhuman hearing that allowed her to hear his heartbeat from a distance.
Sadie acted as a focal point of calm, reason, and generosity for Brody. Growing up on the farm with a strict, masculine father and the absence of a mother, Brody didn't really understand femininity, having been raised to be a man--showcase your physical strength, grow facial hair, only participate and enjoy masculine activities, don't show weakness, etc. He was a rough-and-tumble young man, worked as a farmhand for his father, got into fist-fights at school, and was generally just a 'bad boy' kid.
He changed fairly quickly after meeting and falling head over heels for the dainty, yet fiercely dedicated Sadie. She helped keep him grounded, taught him patience and sensitivity, understood him better than anyone else had.
They grew to be close friends, then confessed to each other one night while they laid in the bed of his father's truck under the stars. He wanted nothing more than to make her happy, to be a better man for her. He proposed after she graduated high school, and they both made it into the same college.
