Born around the end of the Edo period or the beginning of the Meiji period. Hotaru lived a relatively quiet life with her parents. Her mother, however, died from an illness when she turned 6. Her father had tried his best to raise her by himself but was still grieving over the death of his wife and stress from raising Hotaru alone. He turned to gambling and became addicted, thus began neglecting Hotaru when she was still 8. Hotaru was saved by her older half-brother Yasuhiro, whom she met 2 years later. Now she is living together with Yasuhiro in a small village.
