Ophanim Zaragossa (オファニム·サラゴサ, Ofanimu Saragosa) is an Arrancar in Sōsuke Aizen's army. She used to serve as Aizen's tactical advisor.

Appearance

Ophanim is initially introduced as an unnamed classification of Hollow, whose description has been said to fit neither the classification of Adjuchas nor that of a Vasto Lorde. Her Hollow form was that of a floating, amorphous black blob with a dark pink eye at its center. This blob was surrounded by three interlocking rings also lined with a multitude of dark pink eyes, though it was stated to have been four rings before one of them was removed by Sosuke Aizen in his failed attempt to turn her into an Arrancar. These rings were surrounded by two pairs of white wings which, like the mask of a hollow, were also made of bone.

After becoming an Arrancar, Ophanim takes on the appearance of a pale young woman with dark pink eyes. She has long, carnation pink hair tied up into a high ponytail that is divided into two at the top. She has dark pink eyes on both of her palms, but can seal them away at will and seems to be able to spawn as many eyes as she wishes anywhere on her body. Her hollow mask takes on the form of wing-like hair accessories protruding from the side of her head, just above her ears. She wears a black-trimmed white dress with puffy, feathered sleeves, an open chest window, and a petal-like skirt. Underneath this dress, she wears long white sleeves with black trim and a pleated white skirt that gets longer in the back. She also wears thigh-length black-colored, white-outlined boots.

She is also said to look somewhat similar to
Orihime Inoue. This is said to be the result of the Hōgyoku acknowledging Ophanim's wish to look like her during the Arrancar creation process, as Ophanim deemed her to be a "perfect physical specimen" of what a human should look like.

In her resurrección, her long pink hair is worn down. She wears a tight, provocative white body suit, with two belts crossed over barely covering her chest area with her midriff exposed, and white, puffy sleeves cover her arms. She wears large white rings around her neck and wrists, which are covered in dark pink eyes much like the rings of her hollow form.

Personality

Ophanim maintains a bright and cheerful disposition, a fact that sets her apart from many of the Arrancar that she surrounds herself with. She does, however, seem to share the violent and bloodthirsty nature of her fellow Hollows, expressing a sense of childlike glee at the prospect of getting to witness a grisly battle. She is a skilled and intelligent strategist who seems especially excited at the opportunity to devise battle plans that will allow for what she believes to be the most "glorious" possible outcome for a battle. The factors necessary for a battle to be deemed as glorious by Ophanim remains unclear, but both the fairness and brutality of the battle seem to be requirements.

Despite her predilection for violence, Ophanim does not seem interested in participating in battle herself. Due to her physical form as a Hollow being, for the most part, incapable of combat, she instead attaches herself to people that she views as powerful and having a strong sense of leadership. She then pledges her loyalty to them and assists them either as a tactical advisor or in a literal support role in battle. This way, she can both bear witness to the bloodshed she enjoys so much and also receive protection from someone strong, as she cannot defend herself.

Ophanim takes pride in her intelligence and prefers when victory is secured through planning for all potential scenarios or even through raw strength, rather than the use of underhanded methods. Additionally, she does not enjoy one-sided confrontations and does not consider them to be fair battles, looking down on those who fight an opponent that cannot fight back. In this sense, she seems to operate on some code of honor, despite her somewhat skewed sense of morals otherwise. This is further shown by the fact that she admires Grimmjow for his similar code of honor and actively works to repay her debt to Kisuke Urahara for turning her into an Arrancar like she's always wanted, despite her clear disdain for him. Due to her time spent with Aizen, she seems to enjoy debating matters of ethics and fairness, but seems to lack a fully idealized set of morals due to her status as a Hollow.

After becoming an Arrancar, Ophanim displays an alien-like curiosity concerning both her new body and new abilities. While incredibly intelligent and well-studied when it comes to battle, Hueco Mundo, and Soul Society, her inability to understand the World of the Living or anything remotely connected to humanity makes her come off as rather naive and ditzy to Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends. Despite this, she displays a clear eagerness to understand human customs while working at Urahara's shop to repay her debt. Although his patrons find her strange and somewhat off-putting, she seems to be rather well-liked due to her beauty and friendly disposition, having even formed an unlikely friendship with Orihime.

History

Upon first meeting Ophanim, Sosuke Aizen described her as an extremely unique Hollow befitting neither the description of an Adjuchas nor that of a Vasto Lorde. While incredibly small, weak, and incapable of physical combat, her Hollow form was capable of dispensing an unlimited amount of reiatsu so long as the interlocking rings surrounding her center eye continued to spin. For this reason, he did not turn her into an Arrancar, as she could lose this ability upon taking a more humanoid form. She deeply resents him for this.

Equipment

Caja Negación (反膜の匪 (カハ・ネガシオン), kaha negashion; Spanish for "Negation Box," Japanese for "Anti-Membrane of Negation"): An item given to the Espada by Aizen, which is meant to punish their Fracción, if necessary. This cube, when used on a subject, traps them in an alternate dimension from which there is no escape, however, this assumes it's being used as intended. More powerful Arrancar, namely the Espada themselves, can escape, given enough time.

Quotes

  • -
  • (To Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez) "A beast would take advantage of the weak, wouldn’t it? A jaguar would rather hunt down a limping deer than waste energy trying to catch a healthy one. But you prefer an equal playing field—you have a code of honor."
  • (To Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez"But it’s strange not knowing where my hollow self ends and my humanity begins, you know? I once asked Mr. Urahara if he was interested in dissecting me so I could get a grasp on all of the ins-and-outs of what I am, but he just frowned at me and said, ‘Really? After all the work I had to do to get you into this body, you want me to cut it open?’"
