... as well as an unbelievably lonely one. In upholding his life's purpose of providing rest and respite for the beaten-down and weary of his dying world, Russell has denied himself the same— giving and giving and refusing ever to take. He's sturdy, he's a rock: you know he'll always be there,

but a steadiness like that sits just a hair away from stagnant. The door to his home is always open, always welcoming; but that makes it an easy thing to leave through, too.

... Everyone does, at one point or another.

And when they do, he sees them off with a smile and a wave even as a part of him so desperately longs to close that growing distance— to wrap his arms around them and plead, "Don't go."
