Drawing Blood from blade and thorn

Born into High Society. Believes morality is a question of perspective, and thus is unreliable. Order and reputation rule as king and queen. Walks a tightrope of hypocrisy.

Personality

  • Talkative, Charismatic, Gossip - Perhaps a side effect of the cattiness that surrounds high society, Arsene is a notorious gossip. The caveat here is that Arsene will only speak to 'appropriate people'...
  • Pretentious, Entitled, Prejudice - Believes that mages are of a higher 'breed' then non-mages, despite non-mages outnumbering magic wields, and despite the Order's new leader. Prefers the company of other mages. Will tolerate non-mages from noble families. Will limit himself to polite courtesies for anyone else. Will not act rudely for fear of reflecting badly on his family name.
  • Indulgent, Combative, Quick Witted - Subtle quips to courageous challenges, Arsene is quick with both sword and tongue. You might be surprised to find that despite how he carries himself-- hauntingly and with poise-- Arsene is very serious about defending his pride against those who would wrong him. Believes a strong, swift response to disrespect is the most effective remedy. If asked, he would say such a response was necessary, but truth be told he relishes in an opportunity for violence that is allowable in the eyes of the upper class.

History

The Le Petale family had been a source of mages for the Order for generations. All members exhibited flora related magic, or at least that was the reputation. If there were non-mages in the line, they were never discussed. Arsene was one of 5 siblings, and the youngest. His relationships with them were fond at best, and antagonistic at worst. There was an unspoken competition between siblings. That being said, Arsene was the youngest, and thus well doted on by his parents. Living in a delusion, Arsene only associated with other Blue Blood children; even the servants in the home he had no affection for. When he came of age, he was sent to the Order to be trained appropriately. While his magic was subpar at the start, he compensated by mastering swordplay, and experimenting with his blood to unlock the secrets it held. After graduating from his training with the Order, he married another Order mage who he truly had no attraction to but appreciated their bloodline and demureness. Together the couple had an image that Arsene desired... but it didn't satisfy the passion that writhed under the surface. For a while he managed by secretly dosing his partner with his own infatuation elixirs in secret to resolve the issue of his disinterest in them, but it was a bandaid for a festering wound. Soon after, he redirected his methods to dosing himself, and bedding a different breed of mage: those that personified his wild power fantasies. It wasn't long after that the first glimpses of corruption began to show on his face. Unsure of whether it was the self-dosing or his promiscuous secrets, Arsene has reeled himself in... and found a new release for his adrenaline addiction. Unbeknownst to the Order, his family, his partner, or his children, Arsene has taken up the mantle of a Black Knight to hunt those who's ideology conflicts with his own. The safety of anonymity allows him the freedom to act out of propriety. And he loves every moment of it.

Arsene's magic manifests through his blood, which has unique, nectar-like properties. His magic was discovered as a child when pollinators were attracted to his sweat. Experimentation further revealed that the magical properties could be harnessed from his blood. Corruption has tainted Arsene's face, turning it into a giant rose, which so far is luckily retractable. The heart of the rose oozes Red Nectar, and the magic fluids can now be collected that way as well. If left to ferment, the liquids can be used to make brews and elixirs with strange properties, depending on Arsene's focus at the time the blood was extracted. Power can increase the potency of the concoctions, while Discipline increases the different effects the fermented nectar can have. See below for potential potions; a new potion is unlocked for every 2 levels gained in Discipline. Potions effects last 6hr for every 1 power point, and the effects become more potent. See below for specific effects of power per potion.

  1. Infatuation Potion - Arsene's starting brew. Those who drink it are irresistible to those who are close enough to smell their aroma. The more powerful Arsene is, the harder it is for victims to resist requests from the individual afflicted.
  2. False Death Potion - Those who drink it fall unconscious, entering a magical coma-like slumber until the potion wears off. The more powerful Arsene is, the smaller the dose needs to be to create this effect in an individual.
  3. Frenzy Potion - Those who drink it become highly aggressive, with an increased pain tolerance and violent tendency. The more powerful Arsene is, the more the potion clouds the inflicted individual's self-control.
  4. Blood Gas - Like Greek Fire, when vials of these potions are smashed, they erupt. Rather than flames, the effect produced is a suffocating, opaque blood fog that makes it hard to see, sears the throat, and lingers as long as the hours indicated above. The more powerful Arsene is, the harder this magical mist is to dispel prematurely  w/ other magic.

Costs

  • Magic takes a long time or requires a lengthy ceremony to cast (1)
    • Arsene can bottle and ferment his own blood, which is sweet and scented like nectar, to create magical elixirs. The process takes time to prepare
