Blackbird had always been interested in science. His father was a scientist and so he strived to become a scientist as well. He grew up helping his father with experiments and became an expert with creating potions and other solutions. After one particular experiment backfired he was encouraged to pursue another job due to the loss of his eye and leg. Blackbird opened a small shop in his hometown where he sold medicial herbs and potions and took on an apprentice. One day Jack appeared in his shop, accompanied by Via and Ozzie. He had injuries to his ears and nose that needed healing. Blackbird got to work right away and patched up Jack's injuries. Noticing his mastery with medicine, Jack invited Blackbird to travel with him and his crew since it was evident that they needed a doctor on board. Bored with his life in the shop, he accepted the offer, leaving the shop to his apprentice. Blackbird then began his travels with Jack and the crew.
