Elsie Fischer

 Maternal • Private • Stubborn

Overview

Elsie is a young alchemist that specializes in the field of botanical alchemy, specifically in making medicinal tonics and teas. When she was eight years old, her youngest sibling, Klaus, died in a tragic accident when he tried following her to a friend's house. Her parents blamed her for his death, despite her having not known he followed her, and became quite abusive to her and her younger sister, Celestine. When she was 11, Elsie attempted to bring him back with alchemy, and because she opened the Gate of Truth, she had to pay the toll. The Truth took a piece of her heart, and since then, she has been wracked with health issues which include fatigue, shortness of breath. racing, fluttering heartbeat, weakness in her legs, coughing up blood, and fainting.

I want to talk about what happened without mentioning how much it hurt. There has to be a way.. to cure the wounds without reopening them.. to name the pain without inviting it back into me.

Demeanor

Quirks & habits

Elsie flinches when the people around her shout or move too quickly. She often purses and twists her lips when she's thinking or focusing on something. When something particularly moves her, she often lays one or both hands over her heart. Often is seen wringing her hands together when feeling shy or uncertain.

Communication skills

Elsie is an extremely private person, and in most circumstances, she is terrible when it comes to communicating. After living life on her own and having no one to rely on but herself, she finds it extremely difficult to be honest about her needs and chooses instead to keep her problems to herself. This results in her keeping pretty big secrets even from the people she cares most about, such as her health and how serious her 'heart condition' is.

Showing affection

She is a very affectionate person! At first, physical affection was a bit strange for her and often would shrink away from it, but it turns out that she really loves it and often seeks it out. She likes to hold hands, stroke her loved ones' hair, cup their faces into her hands and kiss them on the forehead. When reading books, she will often idly drape her legs over whoever is closest just to have a little physical closeness. When sleeping, she loves to cuddle close and is more than happy to be the big spoon or the little spoon.

Design notes

  • Elsie wears light clothes because she uses a lot of water-based alchemy and more often than not gets wet, and doesn't want to be weighed down by wet clothes.
  •  She wears her hair down because of the scars on her back; she very rarely wears it up unless she knows that her back will be well covered.
  •  The scars on her back are long and vary in thickness, often overlapping in criss-cross patterns. They are pink, silvery, and raised and textured. They're from a whip. Her sister has a matching scars on her back, but they don't number as many.
  •  Curabitur ac finibus eros.
  •  Duis placerat velit vitae massa sodales, eget mattis nibh pellentesque.

Childhood

  •  Eldest daughter of three, Celestine being the second oldest, and Klaus being the youngest.
  •  Due to unforseen circumstances, Klaus unfortunately passed away, and her parents blame her to this day.
  •  Both surviving Fischer siblings were soon subject to their parents bitter resentment and anger.

Elsie was born in 1898 in the town of Izmiruy, a tightknit community in the rocky region just south of the capital, Central City. The mountainous region is rich with minerals, making Izmiruy one of the best suppliers of ore for all of Amestris. Because of this, the community, while small, is quite rich and flourishing, filled with inventors, entrepreneurs, businessmen, and the like. Their father is one such man, who is something of an inventor and holds many patents for many everyday devises in Amestris. He is a learned, studious man who always put a large emphasis on schooling when it came to his children, and each of his children were practically prodigies at very young ages. Their mother had a love for flowers and spent much of her time gardening. They were all very happy.. until the storm came.

The storm was a massive monster that brought with it a deluge the likes of which had never been witnessed in Amestris before. Towns were flooded, landslides cut off trade routes as the storm moved across the span of the whole country. Despite not getting hit nearly as hard as some of the more southern towns, Izmiruy was no expection to the wrath of mother nature. Gentle brooks were soon swollen as the runoff from the mountains reached the small town, but life went on. The night after the big storm, Elsie decided to walk to a friend's house, not knowing that her little brother had decided to follow her. The river she normally crossed was flooded, but Elsie managed to hop across on some rocks. Klaus, however.. was not able to follow his sister's path, and fell into the river. Elsie didn't know that he'd followed her, so when she came home that evening, she came home to absolute chaos. People had gathered to look for Elsie, who they'd thought had been swept away by the river as well; they were relieved to see that she was alright! Her parents, though.. were not.

Her parents didn't even bother trying to hide their resentment for Elsie; they blamed her for Klaus' death openly and unapologetically. How could she not have known that he followed her? Klaus practically followed his big sister everywhere, so why hadn't she thought to check? In their eyes, Elsie killed Klaus, herself. In their grief and blind anger, they became cold.. physically and emotionally abusive with their two remaining daughters, but especially with Elsie, who did what she could to make up for what she believed was her fault. Celestine was a great comfort in those days; no matter what, they at least had each other. And.. Elsie would never allow anything to happen to Celestine. In the daytime, they did their chores, studied, and kept their heads low. By night, Elsie began to research something called.. alchemy. .

Committing the Taboo

  •  Elsie began researching alchemy and began learning everything she could from books, only as a means to an end to try and bring Klaus back. This, obviously, ultimately failed.
  •  For the girl who tried to fill the missing part of her heart by bringing back her brother, the Truth took a piece of her heart.
  •  When he found out what Elsie had done, her father nearly beat her to death, resulting in the scars on her back. Celestine stepped in and took some of the beating in an effort to spare her.

For three years, Elsie studied. There was no real passion or intrigue for alchemy, nor respect for science. Truthfully, it was simply a means to an end. There was something that gave Elsie hope.. hope that she could get her little brother back. If she could bring him back, then they could all be a happy family again.. right? Call it hubris, or just plain naivety, but Elsie was determined to right this wrong she had supposedly commited. At the age of 11, Elsie felt prepared to make the attempt; she was going to bring Klaus back.

As we all know, human transmutation is a huge taboo among alchemists, so she worked in secret, gathering her supplies where she could get them, and in the middle of the night, the girl crept down to the wine cellar and began the process. Of course, as expected, it didn't work. The Gate of Truth was opened, and Elsie was given knowledge beyond what her young mind could possibly fathom, and in return, the Truth took a piece of her heart. Celestine was the first to hear agonized screams coming from the wine cellar. Upon seeing that her sister wasn't in her bed, the youngest sister rushed down to find Elsie collapsed, clutching her chest and coughing up blood. Their parents swiftly followed.

Upon seeing what she had done, her father went into a blind rage. He thought that Elsie brought Klaus back twice, and killed him twice, and he was going to make her pay for it. Already suffering from her wounded heart, Elsie was helpless when he began to beat her, blow after blow of a whip across her back cracking like fire across her poor skin. He would have very likely killed her that night had Celestine not stepped in, throwing herself over her big sister, thus earning her own 'stripes'. When he came to his senses, their father took Elsie up by the wrist and dragged her upstairs, and then out the door. "If you love your sister, you'll never come back." He told her, and slammed the door behind her, leaving poor Elsie badly injured, and.. utterly alone.

Alone

  •  Elsie was kicked out of her home at the age of 11. A kind doctor takes the poor girl in and nurses her back to health, as much as he can. He asks her to stay, but Elsie declines.
  •  This doctor gifts her with a book on botanical alchemy, to help her take care of herself out there. It is one of her most treasured posessions.
  •  Elsie sets off on her own, mastering botanical alchemy.

Alone, in pain and shock, Elsie stumbled way from her home and into the unknown, inevitably passing out on the side of the road, and not very far from death. A boy her age found her and brought her back home to his grandfather, a kind doctor who took her in and treated her; he didn't know what'd happened to the poor girl, but he worked tirelessly to nurse her back to health. It was this doctor that informed Elsie, when she awoke, that her heartbeat was irregular. He thought she was born with a hole in her heart, but he didn't know the truth of what she had done. He warned her that this sort of injury was very serious, and she needed to be careful; it could very well kill her. It might, anyway, even if she was careful. It certainly would shorten her lift drastically if left unchecked.

Ashamed, fearful, and unsure of this man, Elsie refused his offer when he told her that she could stay with him, if she didn't have anywhere else to go. Despite being disheartened by her refusal, there wasn't much he could do; it wasn't like he could keep her against her will, after all. So.. the doctor gave her a book. Since she seemed to be quite the little alchemist, the doctor gifted her a book on the pratical and medicinal uses of botanial alchemy, saying that she would probably get more use out of it than he would. He hoped that it would help her survive out there on her own, and, if nothing else, she might come back one day a master and could teach him a thing or two! Although suspicious of this gift, Elsie accepted it, thanked him for helping her, and set off on her own.. and that book became Elsie's one saving grace.

In no time, Elsie read that book front to back, and then front to back again, soaking up the information like a little sponge. Before long, Elsie was practically a master; it helped that she already knew some of what the book taught, since her mother was big on gardening in the past. Beyond knowledgeable, though, Elsie was passionate about it. When she was sick, she would gather herbs and concoct her own medicines, and sometimes sell tinctures she made for a little money. Enough to eat, maybe.. sometimes enough to sleep in a warm bed. Mostly, though, Elsie saved what money she could.. for Celestine.

See, Elsie wasn't supposed to go home, but she worried for her little sister. Often times, Elsie wasn't very far from home at all, camping out nearby and checking in on Celestine, even if it was just to watch her leave the house and walk to school. Celestine was a smart girl, though, and caught on pretty quickly. Celestine didn't blame Elsie for what had happened at all; in fact, she was just happy to see her big sister! The two would write letters in secret and sometimes meet up in the middle of the night, where Elsie would bring little gifts every so often. It wasn't much, but being able to connect with Celestine was everything to Elsie.. until their parents found out what they'd been doing. Celestine was given an ultimatum; stay home and refuse all contact with Elsie, or face the same fate and be ousted from home, and Celestine.. well, she chose her sister. Now, they set out together to try and make a life for themselves.

For Elsie, though, it was a race against the clock; she was only 16, and already she could tell that her heart was beginning to grow weak. She would wake to her heart racing, aching in her chest like it was going to give out, and nothing seemed to help it. She grew dizzy, breathless, and couldn't walk very large distances without nearly passing out. If she pushed herself too hard, she would cough up blood, just like she did that night when she opened the Gate of Truth. But Elsie had to work.. she needed to provide for her and Celestine. Just long enough.. she needed to hold on for just long enough, until Celestine didn't need her anymore. Hopefully, hopefully.. she could make it long enough.

Elsie loves her little sister more than anything in this life. She would do anything for her, which is very clear to those around her. After their younger brother, Klaus, passed away, Elsie became very protective of Celestine, almost to an unhealthy degree.. but her heart is in the right place. Elsie hasn't told Celestine about her "heart condition", though Celestine was there the night Elsie committed the taboo and witnessed her coughing up blood. When their parents came down to see what happened, their father nearly beat Elsie to death in a blind rage for "making Klaus suffer again", and probably would have killed her had Celestine not thrown herself over Elsie to take some of the blows. They both bear scars from that night, and Elsie feels a lot of guilt for that, but isn't brave enough to say it out loud. Especially not to Celestine.
