Mal (Malcom) is the unfortunate main protagonist

He's a quiet, withdrawn lad who would prefer being an observer but instead finds himself caught up in the middle of things. He tends to be untalkative and reserved, but is kind and cooperative to people who approach him, and enjoys helping others when he is able to even if he's awkward in social situations. He prefers following others' leadership instead of taking command himself, but is remarkably capable on his own as well, having a moderately-anxious thoughtfulness that can allow him to adapt to situations where there is no higher authority. He tends to be indecisive and can overthink tough decisions when he has the time to do so, but urgent situations can spur him to act on instinct. He is loyal and reliable, even if he doesn't say much.

He is motivated by the desire to find his family, but gets caught up in a lot of other nonsense along the way

Appearance
Average-sized Caucasian 19 year old with short dark red-brown hair
He wears whatever random clothes can be found in the apocalypse
He can't swim. That's a random detail the old version had and I'm keeping it. This boy doesn't know how to swim

Story
He awoke after the Bleed on the rooftop to his apartment building exhausted and confused, finding his city overrun with bizarre alien plants. At first he had little memories of the Bleed except for fleeting nightmare-like remnants of the brief hellish atmosphere that had consumed the planet; he has no idea how much time had passed since the event commenced. He returned to his apartment where he discovered his dog, a shiba-inu named Taze, alive and well. There he uncovers more hints as to how much time has passed and remembers that his mom and little sister were out of town. He also discovers the bizarre blackened Wound on his chest which certainly doesn't look good.

He ventures into the city in search of answers, but only finds that the place has been all but demolished by the mysterious event with very few survivors. The first human survivor he encounters is a woman being attacked by Wounded; still having hardly any idea what's going on, he rushes to rescue her by shooting and fending off the bizarre creature, which flees before he has time to fully comprehend what the hell that was. To his surprise, the woman he saved regards him fearfully. From her he learns that the Wound on his chest and neck is indication that he has been infected with the same infliction that creates the Wounded and that it is only a matter of time before he becomes one of them. Though grateful and apologetic, she insists that he can't stay near her and heads her own way.

For some time after he remains confused and distraught by what he's learned. He salvages bandages to completely hide his Wound, but for the next few days he is left to contemplate her words and learn more about the current state of the world on his own. Survivors are clearly extremely rare and the city is instead overrun with the Wounded who keep to the shadows and back alleys, only observing him from a distance almost fearfully. Though his goal would be to reunite with his family, he wonders if he even should if what the woman said was true.

Eventually he encounters and rescues Shepherd from Woundeds. Joyed to have a human companion, Shepherd insists they stick together despite Mal's secret reservations. He obliges reluctantly, and while accompanying Shepherd through the city he learns that humans have had to survive by hiding from the Woundeds, which are aggressive to any non-Wounded they see, even though Mal has been able to walk among them safely. They eventually discover Corey, who is a bitchy little dude that must begrudgingly accept their help. The three of them later encounter and join with another survivor group consisting of Mal's friend Mari, her younger brother Cardinal, and an asshole named _, led by a 40 year old dark skinned woman named _. Though Mal continues to have guilt and second thoughts over whether it's right for him to be among people if he's destined to be like the Wounded, Mari helps provide a grounding force that reminds him that he's still human, even if she isn't aware of it.

As he begins to get caught up in the events of surviving in this post-apocalyptic world with his friends, he becomes more confident in his humanity and his desire to find his family. Through fleeting radio messages, the group hear tell of a growing survival group lead by a knowledgeable authority; the group determines to begin heading there, with Mal hoping that his mother and younger sister will be there as the location is near where they last were before the Bleed.

Around this time Mal's existence is discovered by Azzan through his connection to Scourge. Yoa finds this out, likely from Azzan, and realizes she needs to reach Mal first to keep him away from Azzan.

She succeeds in doing this, and at this point I have no idea how to introduce Yoa to the story calmly without shredding the existing character dynamics to smithereens. The others in Mal's group don't know what to do about her as she wears her Wound visibly and her Wounded status is clear to them, but they tolerate her as a fellow human being distrustfully for some time before she and Mal end up getting separated.

From Yoa, Mal learns about the Bleed and what he is; the existence of Scourge, that the event which destroyed the world was caused by a parasitic alien dimension attempting to terraform the Earth, and that the 'zombies' / Woundeds are humans who remain possessed by the alien god, their Wounds being the entry point from which alien material entered their bodies. He and Yoa retain their humanity because they have a unique resistence to Scourge's possessive energy--an extremely rare trait that makes them highly sought assets for Scourge's servants, as their physical health and mental clarity is integral to leading the Wounded towards the goal of resurrecting the terraforming process. Azzan seeks to cature them and force them to face possession by Scourge, with the ultimate end goal of utilizing their help in reopening the interdimensional rifts and unleashing a second Bleed event that would fully terraform the Earth.

Though Yoa provides a vital grounding force that allows Mal to make sense of himself and the world, they also encounter frequent disagreements. Mal desires to find his family and be with other humans while Yoa insists that they must stay away from other people as they would bring danger to them. It is also strongly driven by her belief that human survivors would kill them on sight for being Wounded, and a shitty family backstory which has culminated in her having little faith in other human beings and not understanding why Mal would want to reunite with his mother and sister. They eventually overcome these differences and come to understand each other. They're queerplatonic besties

idk how all that plays out. if they reach the survivor settlement before facing azzan and explain things to them that would be very complicated to handle realistically and in a way that isnt overcomplicated and cheezy.

The finale adventure culminates when Azzan captures both Mal and Yoa and attempts to force Mal to face Scourge's possession by forcing him in front of an open rift emitting Scourgian energy. This exposures sends Mal on a hallucinatory nightmare adventure in which he confronts and must mentally fight off the entity of Scourge; he barely escapes possession both with the assistance of Gaia-Ra (the embodiment of his own universe) in the dream-realm and the external assistance of Yoa, who goes apeshit and manages to drag him away from the rift. There's probably some empathy for the human being Azzan used to be, who likely still exists somewhere deep down under the impenetrable veil of Scourge's possession, but is entirely unable to be saved and for which death is a merciful end. then mal shoots him
