Profile

Many cycles ago, Sapphire was a man believed to have been chosen by the god Lyphro to unite the people of Enthis. During the time that he formed, there were five villages that once existed before Enthis: Eyos, Nichend, Tuwain, Iethre, Hashor, and Sitier. Each had individual governing bodies comprised of Sages. But when famine struck the villages Tuwain and Nichend, the Sages of the other villages discouraged the sharing of resources, and even prevented trade between villages. This led many of the villagers to lose trust in their current leaders, who refused to consider the villages as a united group. They needed a leader who was able to unite all of the villages without Sage involvement.

Enter Sapphire. Sapphire was born on the first of Lyphro's moon near the village of Iethre, which sits at the center of the surrounding villages. Sages like Citrine took notice of him right away, since gems rarely surfaced during the region's driest season. He was a quick learner and a socialite, making acquaintances with everyone he met. He was admired amongst all the villages for his leadership and charisma, ignoring the demands of the Sages to keep the villages separate. He also learned to read and write completely on his own, despite there being a small population of literate people from each village at the time. He was passionate about the records and history of his region, and often recorded the oral history he learned from Sages into written volumes against their wishes.

The time came when the people decided to appoint a leader. By this point many of the Sages either became less powerful or left the villages completely to practice elsewhere, leaving citizens to become leaders of each village. Zircon, a friend of Sapphire's and a strong mercenary, was considered for the role. However, despite protecting the villages from rock beast attacks, she was still considered an outsider since she wasn't born in Enthis. Zircon agreed that the position was not for her and even supported Sapphire to become their first king. The villages' leaders agreed that Sapphire would be the ideal choice, since he was loved by the people and smart enough to lead without the help of Sages. He agreed to this role, under the condition that he travel to Bevel (a now fast developing city) to learn more about its technology and infrastructure. He wanted the people of the soon-to-be united Enthis to be literate and educated.

After his trip to Bevel, he became Enthis's first king. He was well supported financially by each of the villages. Besides Zircon, who he hired to be his bodyguard and assistant, he also hired a Bevelian woman named Onyx to inquire into the more secretive side of Bevel's technological boom. Later, he hired three more Bevelians to assist him in various fields: Moss, Laguna, and Fire Agate. The Palace was built not just for a place for Sapphire and his workers to live, but primarily as a safe place for records to be archived and kept. Now that the people of Enthis could read and write, and Bevelian history was now being added to the pool, the library became an incredible resource filled with history and knowledge. Almost all of this information was kept open for public viewing, save for the few records in Sapphire's private collection.

Over time, he became more and more obsessed with hoarding information in writing and protecting it from the outside world. His time as king gave him an ego, since he believed he was the savior that united Enthis and provided for its people. In addition to inheriting knowledge from Bevel, he also inherited its bigoted culture that preyed upon transformation gems, which he referred to by the derogatory term "beastskins." This bigotry came to a head when the well-known Sage Titanite, the Oracle, came to Enthis to deliver King Sapphire a prophecy: In the future, Sapphire was to be killed by a red beast. Sapphire lost faith in the Sages long ago, but he could not shake the feeling of terror at the thought of losing everything he had built. His fear turned into anger, and he spent many cycles searching for Titanite to seek revenge. He also became paranoid of the transformation gems that lived around him, and many of them were forced out of the city against their will.

Sapphire then began to form an additional plan: Even if he was unable to carry out his mission forever, he could raise a child in his stead to continue his reign. To him, child stones were simply extensions of their parents. He spent many cycles preparing for this child to have an ideal life and be raised to continue his legacy. But his plan was foiled by Zircon, who along with Moss understood that Sapphire's child would only become an even worse version of Sapphire. Though Moss wanted the child dead, Zircon instead stole the child and raised him as her own to prevent his tyrannical reign from continuing past his expiration date. The child was raised as Z, the youngest of the Zircon family.

Though he did not know the true culprit until much later, Sapphire was understandably furious and upset. He had no more stones to spare to raise as his children, and his only child was presumed dead. He did everything in his power to keep anything and anyone that could be considered a "red beast" as far from Enthis as possible. Cycles later, he even sent Moss to kill a family of transformation gems– the Padparadschas– to prevent them from reaching the city. He did everything in his power to prevent his downfall, despite it being inevitable. When Paddie and Z were caught inside the Palace, he even ordered the death of Paddie at the hands of Zircon, which cemented Z's hatred for him.

After discovering that Z was alive, Sapphire tried to return him back to the Palace, but Z wanted nothing to do with him after Paddie's death. Sapphire's final gambit was to steal one of Zircon's children and offer a trade for Z. Though Z agreed to these terms to get his brother A back to his mother, he and Saoirse formed a plan to destroy him once and for all. After a tough battle, Z and Saoirse fused to form Magenta, a cold and heartless fusion that delivered the final blow while bathed in the red light of dawn.
