Born in Alaska and having moved to Dakota at a young age, Tania Sketcher was set up for disaster. Ever since his parents divorced when he was four, he's been moving across the state to visit one or the other, never in one place for long. He's lived with a dozen aunts and uncles he'd never met til he was on their doorstep, his mother often phasing in and out of legal trouble, who knows why. Tawny adopted his nickname from a beloved aunt Trella, who he wants to visit when he's finally out of his hell of a situation.

For now. Tawny is a struggling high school student with no friends, no interests, nothing. He sits alone at lunch and fights a terminal lung disease that's left him hopeless. No point in trying if he knows he doesn't have a chance, right? So he waits for it to end.
