 High Ryder was an orphan, following after one of many Lightning Dust's flings the older mare didn't want nor had the proper time to care for a tiny infant so she gave her up to one of the many new establishments that Twilight Sparkle created following her success of her school, an orphanage. Lightning Dust was ensured that her tiny baby girl will have only the best care the staff can get her and so with a heavy heart Lightning Dust left, never telling Thunderlane about her. 

Growing up at the orphanage was a challenge for the young filly, since the orphanage included not only ponies but also other creatures from across Equestria. She was rather intimidated by the yaks and the smug griffons that liked to pull at her tail and pluck one of her feathers when she wasn't looking. However she did managed to make one friend, Jet Blast. Jet Blast is a hybrid of a Kirin and a pegasus, although their first meeting startled the young filly, the young pegasi held onto her fast and soon the two began to be fast friends. 

The day she was adopted was one of the stressfull days of her life, she wanted more than anything to be in a family. However she was scared of leaving her only friend behind and so when A.K Yearling came and adopted the young filly she begged her to also adopt her friend to her delight her wish came true and soon Young High Ryder and Jet blast were now official siblings.
