It seems both have grown attached to eachother after meeting on a barren moon during Ereonyx's meanderings, imprinting on eachother by their physical, mental and behavioral similarities. Ereonyx has become a sort of "parental" figure to the little one, now named Tenebra by the crew due to it's dark coloration.
The crew's captain, and the only human Ereonyx seems to communicate with. She was the first one to try and make contact with him during a scouting mission on a foreign planet. After following her back to the ship, she registered him into the crew so that the ship's automated defense systems wouldn't immediatelly fire on him.
