Ansel is the spirit of Wittwald, a large and dangerous forest region that is also Anderswo's most significant landmark. Through the persistent attention and worship of the witch Morwenna Radogast he gains a humanoid form (unlike most "wild" spirits that have little connection to other humans and whose corporeal forms are uncanny and more monstrous), a situation that is both unusual for spirits and very confusing for him, though he is nothing if not excited to try out these new experiences.

He's kind and patient, but his goodwill has its limits - some people worship him as a god of Spring, gentle and merciful, but in other parts of Anderswo he's known as a deity exacting vengeance and cutting down foes like weeds. He has little respect for those that threaten him or his own, and is quick to correct any false impressions on him being a doormat.
