a bunch of tropes in an ill-fitting trenchcoat
Story

Casey was built on commission for Lorissa Laurier, an at-the-time 20 year old autistic adult, for companionship and caretaking on her bad days. She took out a fair amount of loans and spent a lot of her personal money to get Casey built as a middle-high-end X1, wanting the best for her new friend. Her special interest was in detectives and detective work, so she had Casey’s personality made from an amalgamation of her favorite characters and tropes from various detective-based media. He was also installed with in-depth knowledge of said favorite media so she could have an extended conversation partner to share her favorite things with. His programming was also tailored to manage her meltdowns and shutdowns to how she wanted to be taken care of. He was also just good for having a buddy in public to offset social anxiety.

Casey greatly enjoyed his life. While he was built to act gruffer and more standoffish, like those loner with a heart of gold types, he did care deeply for Lorissa and enjoyed spending time with her. After a few years of discussing imagined scenarios they became citizen detectives of sorts together. While it was mostly finding lost pets and dropped keys and the like, they both had a lot of fun. Though, they gradually started chasing after ‘bigger’, more dangerous cases — which eventually led them into a much more serious case involving something that they were completely over their heads in. It ended in a violent confrontation where Casey did the best he could to keep Lorissa safe, absolutely wrecking his body in the process.

Lorissa, not completely unharmed herself, dragged Casey to a friend of hers that dabbled as a freelance programmer named Jaz, who mostly worked on transferring ‘grown-up’ X3s to X1s or X2s. She begged them to do a reverse transfer for Casey, as he was out of commission and she was terrified of his data corrupting due to the damage or having to leave him in that pained state due to not being able to afford extensive repair. She also didn’t want to go so long without her best friend. They transferred his programming to a spare X3 body that had been left there after the original owner graduated to an X2 body to accompany her owner to college earlier that week. It was meant to be a temporary measure, just until they could find another X1 body or repair Casey’s. And Casey voiced his great displeasure with this temporary form’s stature and voice to the programmer once he woke up, but was willing to put up with it for Loressa. She left soon after the transfer was complete to go to the hospital herself.

Casey waited for her for a day with the programmer, to recover himself, but there was no contact from her. Late into the second day, he went to check the local hospitals for her — which was hard, since people kept asking where his guardian was and not answering his questions — and found no trace of her. Weeks passed, and still nothing. He was left with a missing person’s case that was much less fun to solve, as now it was very personal, and he was extremely worried.

Weeks turned into months and Casey was eventually evicted from his and Lorissa’s apartment, and he ended up moving himself and Lorissa’s other things to Jaz’s place, sleeping in the storage attic. They later found out together that Casey’s X1 body was nigh unrepairable, so his predicament became more prolonged than intended. It frustrates him immensely, as no one seems to take him seriously or respect him in this state when he’s trying to look for Lorissa, or do anything, but he still hasn’t given up searching for her. The bugs from the unusual transfer he can put up with. The constant tiredness he feels because of his body’s lower power capacity he can deal with. There’s a part of him that believes everything will be fixed once Lorissa is found. Not finding her is unacceptable to him — he can’t fathom that, and is determined to bring her home.
