Santiago is empathetic, emotional, diligent, and values tradition over everything else. Their one goal in life is to be like his father, and help just as many people and souls as he did. For the most part, he acts like a total cinammon roll who loves everyone. Though he doesn't get angry much, it's really easy to make him sad. Despite that making her an easy target for people, they're always one to share feelings with other people.
- Santiago is very superstitious. He believes in all sorts of tall tales and stuff, like "crossing a black cat is bad luck" or crossing your fingers will ward off bad spirits. He also loves fairytales.
- They're a super big history buff. You can throw any random trivia fact about some random era and he'll most likely be able to answer (especially if the question is about Mexico / Latin culture).
- Santiago is really into cooking. Part of her freetime is dedicated to finding nice little cookbooks and him following the recipes. Her favorite part is searching for ingredients - they love picking out the freshest ones to use.
- Other hobbies of theirs include: learning English and Portuguese, making origami (he recently found out about it and got obssesed), puzzles like sudoku and jigsaw, and visiting places like history museums and abandoned places.
- You might be wondering: "if they're so into tradition and stuff, why do they identify as genderfluid?" Because he's smart enough to know that gender is a social construct and also comes from a country with a third gender. ratio bozo
- On a similar note, you also might be confused about who Micetecacihualtl is. She's a goddess in Aztec mythology that rules the underworld along with her husband by guiding souls. She's the one who gave Santiago's family their necromancer powers!
- Her favorite food is lechon (roasted suckling pig), and their favorite drink is black coffee. Of course, you can tell he's more of a sucker for savory / bittery foods rather than sweet ones. She thinks that sour is okay, and doesn't have a really big spice tolerance.
- They basically tell everything to his family and close friends, and is much more honest around them.
Santiago's main source of magic. They don't really keep it on them since it's quite heavy. When they want to summon it, they visualize a butterfly floating toward them which transforms into the scythe. With it, they can do a lot of epic cool necromancer things like send souls to the afterlife. However, it doesn't have any effect on regular humans.
It's boiling water with one drop of blood from a saint. It burns and turns into fine mist as Santiago sprays it, making it an effective barrier against evil spirits. Can also be used to heal wounds inflicted by demons. (would have been nice if they had this in chapter one am i right)

Santiago taps the weakest point of a human's physical body. The victim's soul splits from their body in the form of a ghost. This cannot be reversed unless Santiago taps the person's weak point again, and then the soul and body will return to one. The victim dies if Santiago has not reversed this after half an hour.
Santiago can split the middle of a soul in half. This permanently sends the spirit to the dimension of the afterlife, where they are assigned to go to heaven or hell. With only one exception, this cannot be reversed.
This spell is notoriously difficult and controversial, but any good necromancer can pull it off. All they need is one physical remnant of the person they are bringing back, a drop of their blood, and a place to do a ritual. It's a little complicated, but after a few chants and the blood offering, Santiago can temporarily bring a dead person back to life. However, this has serious reprocussions and is considered to be immoral.
Santiago can make a temporary portal into the dimensions of the afterlife. This allows him and others to go, but only for as long as the portal is open. Otherwise, they die. However, ghosts can come and go through as they please without any reprecussions.
Santiago was born with necromancy powers. Their dad helped them navigate their way through controlling them, as well as helping them be comfortable with their gender identity. However, he passed away when his child became a preteen. This led to Santiago promising himself that he would become an awesome necromancer just like her dad. He helps souls by fulfilling their last wishes before letting them go to the afterlife.
*claps hands together* WELL, GLAD YOU ASKED! Here's a short summary. If you want a more in-detail description, check out the Imago Daze encyclopedia on Neocities!
Ghosts are free souls that have unfulfilled desires from their time of living. It is a necromancer's job to fulfill ghosts' last wishes, which can be as simple as helping them send final words to a family member or ensuring the status of a loved one. Sometimes, however, this can take lots of time - espcially if a ghost has a last wish unable to be fulfilled. In that case, necromancers console and comfort them. Once a ghost is in a calm state and has nothing left to do on Earth, a necromancer reaps them and sends them into the afterlife.
With some cases, necromancers have to deal with demons. Demons are ghosts but with violent and spiteful desires left unchecked for a very long time. They're harder to be subdued, and when a ghost turns into a demon, it's very rare that they can get turned back. When dealing with demons, necromancers use Holy Water as a way to dispel them and send them somewhere more secure for containment.
Alrighty, let's get into Santiago's backstory, shall we?
*note: this section only uses they/them pronouns for Santiago so it can be easier to read for some people
Santiago was born in Guadalajra to a regular mom and a necromancer dad. Because of their necromancer heritage, they had a very emotional / sensitive personality, as well as ridiculous powers that they couldn't control very well as a kid. They also quickly realized they had very confusing feelings about being AMAB, prompting them to sometimes present more adrogynous or feminine.
Unfortunately, this didn't fare well when it came to school. Kids often embarrassed and ridiculed them for not acting stereotypically masculine. Some even nicknamed them 'La Muerte' due to their 'girlish' nature and necromancer powers.
Throughout all of that, however, Santiago's parents supported them. Both their mom and dad always reaffirmed their gender, saying it was okay if they didn't want to always be a boy. This led to some conversations that helped them figure out their identity as a genderfluid person. One of these conversations included the detail that Santiago's dad wasn't exactly cisgender either, and identified as a non-binary man.
Because of their shared experience of gender and necromancy, Santiago built a very healthy, loving, and strong relationship with their dad. He helped his child learn to better control their powers. Instead of being discouraged, their dad always cheered them on. Santiago felt like he could always rely on him.
Though their relationship didn't last long. Sadly, Santiago's dad would get attacked by a demon. Afterwards, he would die and leave a lasting scar on the family.
At the time this happened, Santiago was only ~12. You can only imagine what was going on in their poor head. SERIOUSLY. Some of the things they were planning to sacrifice in order to get their dad back were not the most honorable / healthy. Such behavior leaked into their school life, too, making them fall behind in work and have falling outs with close friends. Thinking quickly, Santiago's mother homeschooled them for the time being. It wasn't easy, but it was much better than having their child be drowning in work and rude comments from mean students.
Even with lots of support and even some therapy added to the mix, Santiago would never fully get over their dad dying. They graduated highschool with the focus of becoming a necromancer just as good as the one before them. Sure, it might seem noble at first, though oftentimes it's hard to tell the difference between devotion and obsession when it comes to their craft.
For their job, they ended up having to travel a lot to different LATAM countries + Spain. The only time they would come back to Guadalajara was late October to early November for Día de Los Muertos, where he could see his father again. This was also the timeframe in which butterflies migrated south to Mexico. Because of this, their mother gave them the title 'La Mariposa Errante' (Wandering Butterfly).
It's mid October 2002. Santiago is in Hermosillo, Sonora. For the past few weeks, they've been on edge considering the odd things that have been happening to them: itmes being stolen, weird voices whispering in their head, as well as several other things. The bizareness peaks when an English girl named Hazel bumps into them.
They discover she's getting chased by a demon (the hard way). The two end up going on a bus to fight said demon with quick thinking, a broken air conditioning unit, and a lighter with a big flame. Hazel says she wants to stay by Santiago's side because they know how to deal with the supernatural better than her. Even though they still have to get home for Day of the Dead VERY SOON, they still take up the offer to help.
there will be more written here later *thumbs up* thanks for stopping by)
At the beginning of Imago Daze, Hazel knocks Santiago over while trying to flee from a demon. They have a very...reluctant relationship at first, even though Santiago only wants to help. However, as the story progresses, they open up to each other and become close.
Emelda is Santiago's would-be-assassin if it wasn't for her terrible social skills. She ends up proving her loyalty to him as friends, and both of them and Hazel go on a cool journey together.
Even though they don't meet until around half way through the story, they have a complicated past. Luciano wants to kill Santiago to gain necromancers so he can revive his dead kids, but Santiago thinks that's immoral. Good news though: long story short, the two basically realize that both of them are kind of fucked up when it comes to getting over trauma and eventually reconcile. Kinda?
Haven't written much of their relationship yet, but...THEYRE MEANT TO BE!!
