History

She could remember her mother always staring off towards the sea from their home. Quiet and often lost in another world it took a few tries before she'd snap back to reality. Moria had tried to question it but her father would never say and her mother would never speak. She was a quiet woman with beauty beyond those of the local girls in their fishing village. She figured her mother a mute but even then she had some faint memories of her mother humming a heartbreaking tune as she rocked her to sleep as a child. Her mother died in Moria's late teens, a drowning 'accident' so she was told by her father. It wasn't until her young adult years that she found the seal pelt in the addict and realized the truth that had been hidden her whole life. Her mother was a selkie and her father had cruelly taken her seal pelt and hidden it here her mother.

She took the selkie skin without her fathers' knowledge and kept it with her. At first, she simply wanted it as a token of her mothers' love for the sea, to treasure it and keep it safe to bring her spirit some ease. She thought nothing of its powers until she set it over her shoulder to carry something else, and accidentally turned it into a seal in her living room. Scared and confused, the now plump young seal, flopped about the living room floor till she managed to escape the skin.

Since that day Moria sought out the help of elder selkies, even if it meant the town thought her crazy for talking to the seals that came to the beach... But eventually, it did pay off and she found an elderly woman, a selkie who lost her own pelt. At first, the women tried hard to steal the pelt Moria found, since she herself wished to return to the sea, but Moria kept her guard up and the pelt close.

After some negotiating the women agreed to help Moria learn to control the transformation from human to selkie. So she wouldn't accidentally turn again. It took months before she learned some control over it, to have enough willpower to fight off the transformation. The next step was how to keep the pelt safe from not only other selkies but other humans- With it now bound to Moria if another got a hold of it they could keep her as a bride, she won't allow that. With the elder women's help, by now she viewed her as an adoptive grandmother- they worked on combining the pelt wit fabric so she could freely wear the pelt without fear of losing it or others knowing what is necessary. Sealed between fabric it's both warm against the chill of the elements and safe from grubby hands that would use to take advantage of her.
