A former nobleman, with a seat on the high council of Gathor. He was accused of a crime he did not commit, and due to the treachery of an old friend, he was unable to prove his innocence. As punishment he was cast into the Labyrinth to die in the darkness.
He was able to survive on his own for some time, but his magic, known as lin or star magic, works best under the night sky. In the caves beneath the earth, he is weak. He ends up meeting a monster he's no match to face, but to his surprise. Natalin isn't the only person in the caves. He's saved by a man known as Savri.
Natalin follows Savri, and comes to learn that this place, the Labyrinth, where his own nation treats as a final prison for those sentenced death. Actually, has its own cities. And many other countries make use of the resources of the caves by sending adventurers into the Labyrinth's depths.
Some backstory:
Natalin had a close childhood friend named Luquin. Luquin was sick when he was a child and was unlikely to live long. Due to political pressure, as only a first-born son could inherit a seat on the council, Luquin's parents got a body double and dumped Luquin into the Labyrinth. They expected him to die there, leaving no evidence for the surface to find. However, Luquin survived, but never attempted to return to the surface. He changed his name from Luquin to Savri at this time. Due to the highly magical nature of the labyrinth and of the objects and plants within it, Savri's new adoptive father was able to cure Savri's illness.
Natalin was distanced from this fake Luquin that replaced his friend, never getting to meet up again. As Luquin's parents claimed he was too sick. By the time Natalin and the fake met again, years had passed. So much time passed that Natalin never realized his friend was swapped out. Natalin assumed Luquin had changed with time, and although Natalin tried to continue their friendship. He was ignored.
Later, after Natalin became an adult and joined the council, it was the false Luquin who accused him fully prepared with convincing (albeit fake) evidence that Natalin had turned traitor. Ultimately Natalin was cast into the Labyrinth as a criminal. He meets Savri almost immediately after. Due to being tossed into the labyrinth by "Luquin", Natalin never once questioned Savri's identity. Savri just seemed like someone a bit familiar at best. Savri quickly recognized Natalin (and was confirmed after he heard Natalin's name), Savri didn't reveal himself at first because he didn't know if Natalin had changed, corrupted by power like Savri's own parents. After Savri noticed that Natalin hadn't really changed, Savri continued to keep his identity secret after he learned what his replacement did. He felt a fresh start would be better.
Natalin ends up staying with Savri, planning to move out once Natalin found some form of work within Daisycove. However, Natalin instead found himself wanting to see the Labyrinth and ultimately follows Savri's explorations for material for the underground settlement.
